Is it possible for a car w/ manual transmission to prevent you from going into a gear?

A friend of mine was saying that his brother's VW Golf won't let you shift into a gear if doing so would put the engine above redline. I don't see how this could be possible, but I don't really have any way to verify his claim.

Yeah, I can do it in my 95 Prizm too. But then, it's a cheap car so I wouldn't think it would have such a feature anyway.

I don't know if the Golf does that but some cars with a sequential transmission will not down shift into a gear if it will exceed the engine red line. Many automatics will lock out a lower gear if you exceed the speed limit for that lower gear.

It's impossible for a mechanical manual transmission to do this. If it's some type of electronicly controlled transmisison, it would be possible. I doubt such a transmission exists, especailly in that Golf.

That IS possible and exists on many tranmissions.

They are called gates. They can be mechanically or electronically controlled. Many new manual cars have them.

didn't chevrolet have that thing in their f-bodies that prevented you from shifting up (or down?) at a certain point... not sure... some sort of fuel saving measure... i'll look it up.

Yes.

It limited shifting into 2nd gear only if the RPMs were above a certain point.

It was called CAGS, I believe.

CAGS has been in the 6-speeds since 1992 or 1993 until now in ALL (6-speed) F-bodies.

Yep.

It's easy to remove, but it's in there.

It's an electronic thing, though.

why would you bother removing it? it doesn't hurt under hard acceleration and its in there to get the fleet fuel economy up... the only thing shifting to second does when you're not accelerating hard is lower your fuel mileage...

Because it would be a PITA. The whole point of a manual is that you get to control when it shifts.

Exactly. If I wanted Computer Aided Gear Selection, I'd buy an automatic....
