Is it possible for 2 people to play on the same Quake III server?

I have two legal copies of Quake III, behind a cable modem and a Linksys BEFW11S4 router.

A friend and I are trying to play on the same Urban Terror server.

We can play against each other locally, or against others on different servers, but if we try to join the same server on the internet - one of us will crash. :(

If this a limitation of Quake III or maybe a problem with the router?

Thanks!

If two people couldn't play on the same server then it means that no server would ever have more than one player on it! :)

Check your router/modem configuration and make sure you've patched both installs to their latest versions.

Can my friend and I can be connected to the SAME server, sharing the same IP address??

Whenever I attempt this - one of us will crash immediately after connecting...

Both Quake III installs have been patched to the latest version (1.32), and we're running the latest router firmware. To the best of my knowledge, the router is configured correctly.

I'm unclear on your configuration...are you saying you've got two computers each with Quake III on them and you've given them both the same IP address?

It's called NAT, a lot of games don't deal with it well.

There's a Q3 NAT module for Linux that allows multiple machines behind the gateway to play on the same server, but I don't think any consumer routers are setup with something like that, even the Linksys ones that run Linux.

My configuration is a common one: I get a single IP from my cable ISP, and use a Linksys router to allow other computers to have access to the internet. Locally, each computer has a unique address (192.168.x.x). NAT is used to bridge the internal IP addresses to the single external IP address.

Nothinman: Thanks for the info about the Linux module. Do you have the name or a link to this? I'm willing to replace my router if necessary to get this setup working.

Thanks!

I think q3 had/has an option in the config file where u could specify the listenining port of the client machine
if this is true, that you and other ppl behind the router will be able to connect to the same q3 server,

Not off hand, I think it was call ip_masq_quake and I don't think it made it into 2.4 kernels for whatever reason. I also found mention of something called qudproxy which is a quake proxy written for q1/q2 to do what you want and it should work fine with q3 as it's very similar.

But HJB417's idea is probably simplest if it works, I do remember seeing mention of that client side port option before but never had a reason to look into it.

yes it is possible, one of you need to change this setting in the config or on the .exe executable.
+set net_port 27961
by default both of you are set to 27960 and one of them needs to be different...that way both of you can play at the same time with no problems. punkbuster will still give you fits if you are both using the same cdkey though ;)

loop, i think that command is only for if you are hosting a server not if you are a client, if you are a client, you both would use different ports when connecting to the server all routers have this function (tho windows does most the work) linux routers/proxys will do this just find with ip_masq_quake3 my router does just fine, this goes with all games (maybe not DirectPlay servers like dungeonsiege where directx chooses the port instead of windows, but there are client programs that will fix it for you

nope, trust me this is the one that works...i have done it many times from my own lan(behind my linksys router) and can get on any server from multiple pcs on one ip addy. I think you might be trying to make this more complicated than it is...it is a setting within the game of quake 3 itself. I even have it written down on a post-it and placed inside my cd case if i forget it :)

It works with q2 as well just have to use ports 23234 and 23235 or whatever the range might be for that game.
