sure, programs like "NTune" are widely used to do it...but it's not as stable or safe as OCing in BIOS...

True.

If you want to OC, learn to do it thru the bios, or you're just asking for problems.

yes. i only do it for testing purposes, so i can run stability tests really quick. then i go into the bios and set it. Clockgen is a good one. make sure you get the one that goes with your motherboard. you will also need A64 Tweaker to adjust memory settings and dividers. its a lot riskier than in the bios, so be carefull. make sure you have a lot of overclocking experience before you use these programs.

Look at his profile. He's using an Intel 2.4 (Northwood?) so A64 Tweaker is out of the question ;).

A lot of enthusiast motherboards come shipped with utilities that allow you to overclock from the OS. You should be able to download it from the Gigabyte website (if that board is supported).

I agree with n7 and would never overclock my $1500 rig through the OS. Too many horror stories out on the 'net of encountering problems that way.

oh, oops. i am not used to people not having a64's around here! anyway, yeah, one time, i was using clockgen, but my mem couldnt handle it, and i couldnt set a divider. the computer locked for like 10 mins. i couldnt restart or anything. then i got a bsod, and luckily it booted back up, but its just a scary thing.
