Is it possable to get a 1-way (hybrid) cable modem to work under linux?

I have an ISA 3com cable modem VSP for Adelphia Powerlink. I have SuSe 7.0 (kernel 2.2.17) pro, Mandrake 8.2 (Kernal 2.4), and am looking for a good FTP server to d/l SuSe 8( PM me if you no ne good mirrors). They only gave me win 9x drivers for this card which is now discontinued. I have it on a win98se system now but it is too unstable for NAT. i would like to setup a linux system but i coldnt find the drivers or the software.
PLZ HELP!!!

I just did a quick search at Google, and I could not find a Linux driver for the 3Com VSP cable modem. Not surprising, really, since internal cable modem cards are generally highly proprietary and unsupported under anything other than Windows.

I highly recommend that you contact your cable company and see if you can have the card replaced with an external modem. You could tell them that you've sold your old computer and that the new one has no ISA slots. Very few new computers have ISA slots, so it's likely that they've stopped using the old 3Com ISA modems years ago.

I dont think that is a possability(adelphia is the devil:|). iis there nething els i can do or should i just grin and bear 98?

I didnt see anything on it either, but you could always try installing linux and seeing if it is supported. I would definitely try calling the cable company and trying to get a different adapter thingy. Some work, some dont...

Why? No matter how crappy Adelphia may be, they have to accept the fact that nearly all new computers do not have ISA slots. If they were trying to foist those ISA adapters on new customers, then there wouldn't be any new customers. Thus, they must have switched to something else -- either a newer PCI card, or more likely an external USB or ethernet-based modem. They also have to accept that existing customers will purchase new computers and get rid of the old one(s), and must have a plan in place to allow for a modem swap when that occurs -- else they'd be losing quite a few customers.

Most people here have several computers. Do any of yours have NO ISA slots? If so, just have that one be your "new computer" for long enough to get Adelphia to swap your modem out with something less ancient. Heck, you could "borrow" a Macintosh system from a friend for a short time and tell them that you switched to a Mac -- then they'd have no choice but to issue you an external modem 🙂.

Alternatively, some cable ISP providers will allow you to purchase your own modem and will then give you a small monthly discount. Does Adelphia allow this? New cable modems have become relatively inexpensive, and can be regularly found for $80 or less. Used ones can often be found for less than half that amount on eBay.

As far as Linux support... you're unlikely to get that to work unless you can get an external modem with an ethernet or USB port.
