Is it overkill to get an 8800gts for my future setup?

As I'd like to get a 24" Dell widescreen, it's not the right time. (please add this to the equation though, along with the question below)

I want to know, with the setup below, if I need an 8800gts/gtx for max perfomance running 1280x1024 with the most recent games on my Sony monitor?

(near future computer)
Monitor-- Sony 19" lcd
Cpu-- Intel Core2 Duo 6600
MB-- Intel P965
Ram-- (still working on this but will be decent)
Video-- (?)
HDD-- Raptor 150gb
DVD-- Sony DRU820A
Sound-- Creative X-fi Xtreme

I wouldnt say the GTS model is overkill with your Sony. Sure you can get by with less card but thats a personal call on your part. I wouldnt say the GTX model is overkill with a 24" model neither. Right now the better deal is the GTS since they want an ungodly amount for the GTX model. Basically i'd say either 1)Get something lesser than a G80 for now and then upgrade when you get the 24". By then there may be better cards, certainly current ones will be cheaper. 2)Get the 8800GTS and it'll be there and ready for when you get your 24". Your choice.

I would think that an 8800 anything is overkill at 1280x1024. I gamed at that res with a 1900xtx and there was nothing, not even Oblivion, that bogged it down to less than 30FPS with max eye candy. To be fair, oblivion had isolated dips to 20-ish FPS but largely most of it's time was 30-60 FPS. In fact, When I stepped up to 1920x1080, my FPS's only dropped by 2-5 frames, which seems odd since the pixel count is almost doubled. but whatever!

unless you have at least 1600x1200 I dont see much point in the 8800 series cards.

If you get youself a 7600GT or 1650XT for under $150 (Or a 7900GS for a bit over $150) you'll be quite happy at 1280x1024 now and can wait to pickup the next version of the 8800GTX or the ATI equivalent after you have your monitor. By that time prices on DX10 cards will have dropped at least $100 and possibly the full cost of your intermediate card.

Personally, I'm of the mind that you spend big money on a monitor first as it's a longer lasting part.

Yes, because DX10 will cause system requirements to actually decrease for games next year.

Question: do any of the people suggesting to not get the 8800GTS have an 8-series card...? Dude, get the 8800GTS, you will be glad you did... (especially after you get that 24 incher)

You probably don't NEED the 8800GTS right now but you will be happier if you did get it. I just gon the eVGA model last night and I'm very happy with it. But I can still bring it down fps wise even at 1152x864 in bf2/special forces. And that's with it OC'ed to 650/1000 for core and memory. Just turn on 16AA and 16AF and high quality texture setting in the control panel and enjoy the eye candy. Maintained 65+ fps on the IRON GATOR special forces map which is a vid card killer usually. I may still "step up" to the GTX version yet! (I have a CRT that can go 2056x1440- the GTS drives that res. OK too but can't get as crazy with the AA at all).
