is it okay to use refresh rates my monitor doesn't support?

just because it's not listed does it mean it can't be used safely? (my monitor says max of 60 hz on 1280x1024... but i want to bump it to 85 hz)

If it aint supported, It wont work.

If it does work (Which in some cases does 😕 ) It either a) Wont actually be at the higher refresh rate, but the 60hz max supported or b) The picture will not display correctly.

And some monitors can actually be damaged by trying to run them at a higher rate than they can handle.

That sounds like a good idea 😉

Get a bigger/better monitor.

Out of curiosity, what monitor is it?
