Is It Okay To Play At 1080p On A Native 1440p Screen?

Would it be bad if I played at 1080p on a 27 inch 1440p monitor? Would it look worse than a native 27 inch 1080p screen? Has Anyone ever tried it? In comparison with a native 1080p screen. I also wanna play console games and will be using the HDMI input on Dell S2716DG for consoles. (probably gonna get this if I get a 1440p screen)

I am gonna get the 1080ti in April 2017 (should be out by that time) and I will probably buy a Ultra wide monitor 144hz IPS 3440x1440 (display port 1.3) by December of 2017 or January of 2018. Either way I will have 8 or 9 months to take advantage of the 1440p resolution with planetside 2 due to my upgrades.

One of the main games I play on PC is Planetside 2, I really need high frame rates since it is a FPS.

My performance as of right now. I can really notice the difference and I prefer playing at 1080p since it feels faster and more fluid.

Planetside 2 max settings (not willing to go below max graphics settings but I turn shadows off)
1440p DSR 55-90fps

1080p 80-120fps

1080p stretched to fill the 1440p display won't look as good as a native 1080p panel, no. I believe that you can simply use the GPU settings to NOT scale the image, so you'll have a perfect 1080p image surrounded by black bars.

I'm confused, but maybe my reading comprehension is poor. You're wanting to buy a monitor now that you don't have the GPU power to display now, but you're going to replace that monitor and GPU in 18 months?

Don't buy the S2716DG.
As much as I love Dell's displays, and I have an ultrasharp display on my desk, this one is horribly overpriced ,a TN panel for retail price... Also half the reason you want to buy it is to play at 1080p from a console = waste so much money on G-sync you cant use on panel you cant use at native resolution..

Just buy a decent 1080p 27" IPS monitor for the time being if you love console gaming and don't have the horsepower to run games at native 1440p on the PC. They are relatively cheap and you could game at native resolution till you buy a new GPU and a decent ultrawide monitor. the only drawback is day to day work, as the DPI is low for a 27" panel, but its better then paying 700$ on display with not so great panel and futures that you will not use.

A lot of newer games I'm seeing with a render scale option. Basically what it does is draw the UI at the native resolution, but the 3d part is rendered at whatever percent of the resolution your native res is. 75% would get you 1080p with a 1440p UI. You can go over 100 for some MSAA.

Real answer- sure it just won't be as sharp. native resolution is always better.

ATOT answer- If you aren't going to do it right you might as well buy a console you peasant

Yes it will look much worse than a native 1080p monitor.

You should buy a 4K screen which will allow you to play natively at 1080p. If you can't afford it then buy a 1080p screen. A 1440p screen sounds like a terrible idea for you since you will also play on consoles.

No. It is not okay playing a 1080p source on a 1440p display.

The pixel counter police are pulling in your drive way as we speak to take you away for your perverse resolution sensibilities. I suggest you don't resist.

Stop speculating. You don't even need to make this thread.

I guess turning down a setting or two to hit smooth fps at 1440p isn't an option?

PC Gaming at it's finest. Why see what the settings look like? Max everything or forget it!

Planetside 2 is the only game I am having issues with, if I end up sticking with Battlefield 4 then I probably will in that game to. I will have to test it out again but as people have said, I also plan on console gaming so that would also look horrible on a 1440p screen supposedly. I really don't think it will.

I have a BenQ GW2765HT 27" 1440p ips. And when I was having to use it for my comp and Ps4 I never noticed a difference beyond the color quality when compared to my BenQ GL2760H 27" 1080p TN."

I don't think I should risk buying a 1440p monitor then. I really wanted to try out G-Sync though and I don't wanna use display port converters just to play on console games, can't be certain things will run smoothly and I would always have to switch it anyway. This is the only 1080p GSync 27 inch Monitor I can find that also has HDMI.

Of course native is always best.... BUT different monitors may handle the scaling a little better than others. To me, it looks worse on desktop and in some games, but looks better on one of my monitors than the others. 1080p movies seem to do even better and I have no problem with that on any 1440p monitor I've used/owned (3 in last couple years). This on PotPlayer and/or MPC-HC.

Honestly, 1080p is playable on my QWHD. Certainly more playable than say 1280x1024 on a 1080p screen and the screen real estate for the OS is very needed.

It will look okay. But not as sharp as a 1440p but pretty much identical to 1080p.

For the record you can get Nvidia GPU's to scale to either have it the exact res with black borders, fill the screen completely, or fill as much of the screen but keep the aspect ratio.

Not sure about AMD.
