Is it okay to mount HD's vertical ?

There's a pretty expensive anodized aluminum case at the computer show which has the HD's mounted in a vertical position on the floor of the case right in front of the fan. The cooling thing sounds like a good idea.
Would it hurt the HD's to mount them this way ?

not a problem. To make certain though, it's best to reformat the hd's, in the position that they will be used. That way the tracking is laid down consistant with the gravity in which the hd's will be utilized. If you're already past that point, just go ahead and you shouldn't have any problems. but if you do, it's probably a tracking error problem.

I have the Palo Alto ATCX case and it mounts the hard drive vertically in the front, and the drive works just fine. The same case is used in many Dell Dimension models for the past 5 years.

It isnt so important as to how its mounted then how much shock it takes *during* operation. DOnt wanna head crash cause it got a good thump!

If you are talking on the long end, MOST tower dell dimension's for the last 5 years have done it that way. My 1.6 gig that I got in a 166 that many years ago is still running while a horizontal 5.1 died a couple of months ago.

If you are talking on edge, that's how many (4U+) rack mount servers do it and lots of PC raid bays. (Dell, Compaq)

Yeah, my old Dell came like that... I don't see why it would affect the hd's in any negative ways at all...

It's not only acceptable to mount HDs vertically, according to the installation instructions, but it's actually desirable because it provides better protection from most thumps, which are in the horizontal direction, and it makes drives run about 3C cooler, overall, while the hottest chips (60-70C) will drop 10-20C.

There is absolutely no need to reformat the drive because all modern drives use factory-recorded servo marks, which automatically compensate for track drift caused by expansion and by the magnetic bits forcing themselves closer or farther apart. Bearings shouldn't matter at all because they're pre-loaded, meaning they have no slop.

Just got the literature and it was a Lian Li. I believe it does have a front USB hub. It was a mid-tower that came in several colors and was going for $185. Excellent quality and craftsmanship.
