Is it okay to just e-mail a prof asking if they would mind writing you a reference letter?

One of my profs took a liking to me last semester and I wanted to ask her for a reference letter. Is it considered acceptable just e-mail them asking if they would mind giving one?

Also, do they usually send you the reference letter and you hold onto it until you need it? or do they send it to the party that needs the reference letter?

Thanks!

I guess you could, but it would more tactful to do it in person or at least voice if possible.
In my experience the letter has been sent directly to the designated party.

Thanks a lot, SampSon!

I would be as formal as possible. Submit a letter of intent to your prof. to let him know you value his reference.

And to answer your 2nd question, reference letters are usually sealed to ensure that it is genuine. Basically, you'll need to request them as required. They're not items which you stockpile until needed.

I wanted to ask a prof. for a rec. but really I just couldn't bring myself to even ask. They know nothing about me at all heh. Oh well.

Depends on how well you know them really. Most of the people I've asked for references I knew well enough (as in been to their house and/or drank beer with) that it wasn't a big deal to just email and ask. The one I can think of I didn't know well I asked in person. And they will usually send the letter directly.
