My favorite "what is haiku" reference (Alexey Andreyev) says rhymes (can be) fine, just as the 5-7-5 "rule" is really a convention pushed by lazy teachers to simplify grading.

The idea that a haiku has to follow a 5-7-5 rule negates it's artform. Why not a 3-8-3 haiku?

God forbid we go beyond what's expected of us! God forbid we actually get something out of it, learning on our own, rather than jumping though other people's hoops!

I actually write poetry on my own, but I've never been a big fan of haikus. that's horrible, I know, and it's all because of our faulty education system.
