Is it OK to ship a DSLR with the lens mounted?

Need to ship my D70S cross country (loaning it to family), is there any reason I can't just drop it in its bag, a box with plenty of padding, & send it on its way?

Fully disassembled & in the original packaging + 2nd box will necessitate a MUCH larger package.

Assuming there is no chance of opposite pressure being put on the body and the lens, it should be fine. I have shipped DSLR's many times, and usually seperate the body and lens. Just make sure that the bag you 'drop it into' is going to secure the camera and lens in place, and certainly make sure to have a good 4-5in of padding between the box and bag.

EDIT: This is assuming a relatively short lens, like the 18-70. If it's something longer, say the 70-200mm or such, you'll definately want to seperate the two.

Ship it how it came in the OEM box in another box with padding. I would pay an extra $10 dollars in postage to guarantee a $1000 dollar item's safety.

If the lens is plastic mount, separate them.

If you don't have them, get a body cap and a rear lens cap and ship them separate. Too much possibility for torque against the lens mount.

Ehh, I wouldn't do it, but if there's no other way and you package it correctly, you shouldn't have a problem.

I had everything original (including body & lens cap) so I went ahead & separated everything out.

Turns out they had a box that wasn't too much larger than the Nikon box so it worked out well. Only $50 for Express from PA to CA including $1100 insurance.

Thanks for the responses, hopefully it will make the trip safe & sound.

with shipping both ways ($100). They could use that as a down payment for a refurb Nikon D50.

The bulk of the cost was the express shipping, return they can send it Priority for all I care.

Plus they wouldn't have time to get one before they need it.
