Is it ok to pull out IDE HD in a HD tray while computer is running?

its a regular HD in one of those swappable drive bays. im just wondering what would happen if i hot sway drives and put in a smaller drive or something.

At best it won't work, at worst you could fry something.

Don't do it.

Just because you have a removable drive bay does NOT make the drive hot swappable. It would be no different than swapping the cables between two drives that were mounted directly in the case.

Ummmm, I think you'd be fine in taking it out (because you're not interrupting anything really...

But if you plug a smaller one in while the comp is running, unless this is some special computer, the PS could die the minute you plug your drive in. (plus I don't think it's too good on the drive)

dont unplug it. mine died. i always just unplugged it for about 2 years. always worked. plug back in, u can access it again. =) then it finally died. when plugging it back in, i uh, acidentally shorted out the hard drive. the power plug hit the other thingies. oh whatever

Viper's right...

(I am too, but he posted before me 🙂)

But yes, I would not plug another one in. I guess if you wanted to try your luck taking it out, be my guest. Plugging it back in would almost ruin or damage something in your comp.

ide != hot swappable.

those bays allow you to SWAP drives when the computer is OFF!!!!!!!!!

unless you have a usb enclosure ;-)

What if nothing is happening? What would happen if you unplugged the IDE cable while your computer was sitting, doing nohing, then plugged it back in?
