is it ok to mount my c:\ (windows 2k os partition) under linux?

i thought i remember something saying that it's not a good idea? but i'm definitely not sure, all my other fat32 partitions under windows are fine mounted under linux too.

fat32 = yes
ntfs = no (some folks might try to claim 'sorta, maybe, read only, blah blah')

It is perfectly okay to mount your windows partition in linux, just take the same precautions as you do when using windows regarding important os files. Havent used it, so im really not sure about the stability of the ntfs driver, but from what ive read here, it seems perfectly okay.

I've never had any problems mounting NTFS partitions read-only. But from what I've read, trying to write to them is a Bad Idea. By default, a mounted NTFS partition will be readable only by root. That can probably be changed, but I've never looked into it.

Whether or not it's read only is moot, it's still mounted, isn't it?

you're sorta, maybe, pulling answers out of your ass, blah blah.

Yes, it is ok to mount. Read-only though, otherwise it corrupts the filesystem.
And I have it mounted to my login can read it as well as root.

i use ntfs in linux ( ro ) since slack 8.0 came out ... and thats fine ... just the 2.4.5 kernel's support that was something like weird ... it would access every file there ... but just who what it wants ... :/

now i moved to 2.4.19 and works pretty fine ...

As everybody has said, read-only only :). I have mounted my windows NTFS drive ro for months now and no problems whatsoever. I have read many warnings NOT to mount it rw, hopefully one day they will be able to iron this out so I could write to it.

If I can mount the NTFS partition in Linux read-only....could I use it to copy some files to another HD that is partitioned as FAT 32? I have some directories on an NTFS drive that all of a sudden I cannot access the directories in XP....but using a data recoversy software demo I can now see the files.....I simply want to copy them so i can reformat the offending HD.....
