Is it OK to leave wireless router on all the time?

I've had a wireless setup for over 3 years. Up till recently I used a 802.11b Seimens router and Seimens card for my laptop. It's connected to a LAN cable to the desktop and my cable modem.

Since I sometimes surf the net late at night after everybody goes to bed, I've always left the router and modem on 24/7 unless I leave town for a few days. Never had any problems with this old setup.

Alas, the router seemed to have died 2 weeks ago and I purchased a Netgear g router. Things are working OK, but every 3 days everything (wireless and wired) slows way down. Unplugging the router for a few minutes and restarting it gets everything working OK again.

So the question - best to leave it on or turn it off? Before you ask, I live in a very small southern town in a residential neighborhood. I know of no one around me that has cable internet much less wireless, so there's little or no chance of someone using my wireless.

Your thoughts will be appreciated!

Thanks,
Dennis

You should be fine leaving it on all the time. I would say that rouer makers assume their equipment is kept on all the time since that is what most people do with their networking equipment.

I would definitely leave it on all the time unless you are leaving the house for a couple weeks or more. Odd that your Netgear gets slow. Have you tried updating the firmware?

I have a wrt54gs and I haven't turned it off in almost a year... and i live in the DC metro. 😉

I never bother to turn my Linksys Wireless-b router off and there are 2 or 3 people in my building have wireless routers.

Yeah, not much point to having "Always on" Internet if your router is off. *grin* As far as performance you should be fine, so I doubt that is the issue with the router, try updating the firmware as someone else suggested. If not look into a linksys router, I have always had better luck with them. Also, as long as you have your network secured i.e. MAc filtering and WEP/WPA then you should be fine.
