Is it ok to add a extention to a electric item?

Like a extenison cord? To beable to plug it in. If not is it ok to add a surge protector instead to extend the cord ?

let's say it wasn't ok to connect electric items to extension cords. what then would you connect to extension cords?

If you are talking about using an extension cord with something like a refrigerator the answer is you shouldnt but if you must make sure the cord is rated for it.
