is it ok, for a motherboard to be hotter than the CPU?

hi,

I am using a SLK900 with a 80mm variable fan
and my current CPU temp in bios is 40 °C while the Mobo reads at 42 °C
My mobo is a A7N8X non deluxe version,
flashed from a bios ver. 1.001E to a 1.02b

the board is rev. 1.04
any idea why is this happening?

Normally, CPUs are suppose to be warmer,
I am using athlon XP 2100+ t-bred B
OC from 1.7 Ghz to 2.2 Ghz

It all depends on where the sensors are I guess, especially with a 2 C difference. Have you fired up seti or something else to heat up the CPU ? It's not uncommon for the sensors to show up switched around in a lot of programs.

well, in bios it shows this way,
but in ASUS prob,
it shows the other way round that the CPU is 42 C
while the mobo is 40 C,
seems pretty confusing:confused:

On one of my computers the mobo (Asus CUBX-E) has been reading 48ºC while the CPU has been reading 33ºC. It's current box originally came with a Pentium 166 (I've recently gotten into the habit of making Frankenstein computers). It has an 80 mm fan in back (running maybe 2500 rpm) and a fan on the Celeron 500 processor's heat sink (running maybe 5700 rpm). The processor came from an HP and the fan from the P166.
Here's the good part: Said combination WAS in an old Dell Dimension XPS M233s box and the reported temps were just the opposite. The fan in back on that box was the Dell 92 mm. That's about the only difference.
Temperatures are being reported via the Asus Probe program.
Any ideas? I'm going to be putting another fan behind the front of the case as soon as it comes in.

Heh, I checked it this morning and the temps were 26ºC processor (room temperature!) and 45ºC motherboard. That motherboard has me worried.

What are the temps after your CPU has been running 100% for a few hours? How much fluctuation do you see in the temps? An air cooled CPU temp is hardly ever (never) room temp so I suspect that you've got a very innacurate sensor. The motherboard chipset temp seems a bit on the high side too. I think the asus probe program has been known to reverse the two temps in the past.

That's probably what happened when I switched boxes. I don't know why it would do that. Crazy, isn't it?

my 2.4 is currently indicating 32c while my Gigabyte m/b indicates 36c; i have yet to see my cpu temp go above the "system" temp; all indicators are the same---bios, mbm, cpucool and ET4; no explanation for it though!

I have the a7n8x non deluxe and I believe the asus probe is crap. It reports my cpu being at 22 degrees and my mobo at 35 which is insane because room temp here is like 82 F (sorry dont know C conversion). But even so, the northbridge gets really hot... like hot to the touch. It has me worried...

i think the cpu and mobo temps are switched...like the readings should be flipped around...
