Is it normal to still be dependent on your parents after college?

So I'm 22 and I will be graduating from college in a few months. There aren't really any good jobs for a BA in my field, so I want to go straight to Grad School, but I don't have the means to pay for it, so my parents will have to. I'll probably also be living with them, as my college is close by. Is this normal? Also, I'm taking 9 semesters to graduate instead of 8. I started college in Fall 2012 and I'll be done in Fall 2016. Is that normal?

According to most of ATOT you are a loser if you are not out of the house by 16. But reality is, cost of living is so expensive, and entry level jobs don't pay enough, so it is not out of the ordinary to stay with parents for a while so you save up money to live on your own and work your way up the pay scales at work. That's what I did, I moved out at around 23. Ask your parents to see all their bills as it will give you an idea of how much money you need to be making so you are ready to be on your own. Even if you save money there is no sense in moving out if your income is less than all the bills. For fun you can even break it down per day. I did it once and all my bills come up to about $82/day (been a while since I updated that spreadsheet though). So a job that makes less than that is not enough.

Heck I don't see anything wrong with someone staying with parents even up to or in their 30's, as long as they are not freeloaders and help around the house, and actually are working on getting out. Maybe they're waiting to get a better job, or saving up for a house downpayment etc. Financial life now is harder than it was before.

I'd say you need to be supporting yourself by the time you're 25. Early 20s is still practically childhood imo.

Probably for housing maybe, I don't think I would expect them to do any other favors for you other than that.

Most people never move 10 miles from where they grew up. Many are still sucking on mom's tit in their 30s and 40s.

Why can't you find a job? If you need to go to grad school to find a $100k job I still don't think it's worth it. You run the risk of getting too comfortable. IMO, it's important to have the fire under your feet to motivate you. There are plenty of people who worked and went to grad school. When you have to pay rent, electricity and food you're more motivated to succeed. When mommy is tucking you in at night, and fixing your din din you're going to be less motivated to succeed.

This is just my opinion. :)

That'll put your parents one foot into the no-retirement early grave but sure whatever it takes to avoid working at starbucks.

I'm not going to argue with a single word of that... but let me add that there are many who went to grad school and came out jobless with over US$ 150k in debt.

And 45% of student loans are delinquent? Dafuq?

"So my parents will have to"? This is a joke thread right?

Parents are parents they will support you no matter what. They will stop supporting you when you have a *full time* job. If they don't support you then you might as well kill them before they kill you.

As long as you've got a job then it's acceptable. No job, no dice. Doesn't need to be your dream job, just a job to show you're not completely reliant on mom and dad.

I lived at home until I was 27. I worked through school and paid for groceries, Internet, cable and family cell bill in addition to chores and such. So yes, I was able to save money but I wasn't a freeloader.

"Normal" is a really stupid word. Let's say it isn't the best idea.

How does he save money if he can't even afford tuition? Better beg Uncle Bernie for some "free" tuition....
