Is it normal to see 15-20 access attemps per day on a wireless network?

I have a very simple wirless setup in my house. We use a g router running a simple setup, the only wirless device is my wife, my comp is wired into the router. I have been watching the status screen and see 15-20 blocked attempts a day to get into the router which seems very strange to me.

My security settings are pretty lax as we don't really share much useful information. I use pre-shared passcode WPA security, SSID broadcast disabled, and MAC address filtering. While all these could be defeated quite quickly with the right program, they should keep the average joe out.

Does anyone else get this many attempts daily to get into their network? I am not in an apartment building but I do live in pretty dense housing.

probably just spywares if it is the same thing non-stop. a real human would stop and try something else after failing the first 2-3 times.

edit: however, i guess a hacker would keep bombard your router to fish for the encrypted key.

spyware will attempt to gain access to the router?

I guess I should explain my setup in a bit more detail. We are connected to the internet through an ISP that is part of our housing development. All the houses are pre-wired with CAT 5 and there is an 8 port switch in each house. These attempts came through whatever firewalls are in place, then through the switch, then to my machine. Seems a bit wierd to me.

yeah in that case, spyware that infected someone else's machine on the same network might be the culprit.

probably just clients trying to roam to your AP given you have a high density of housing/appartments.

A client card will constantly try to connect to any AP it can hear. Some (intels) are notorious for roaming very frequently.

there isnt any known spyware that looks for wifi networks to jump onto. you probably just have nieghbors that have geeky teenages.

As a mater of fact, yes, I do have torrents going. I don't pay for cable so I have to keep up on my stargate somehow 🙂

i'm almost certain it's your neighbor attempting to access your signal via a pda from the toilet.
