Is it normal to have a sink fill up with water (like it's clogged) when a garberator is installed?

Our kitchen sink has a garberator and the sink seems like it's always clogging up.

If we run the unit for 20 seconds or so, the water usually passes though, but it doesn't seem to me that just filling a sink with water should cause problems like this.

Do you ever need to take it apart to clean it? It looks like there is a ton of junk left in the unit right now. My mom insists that it's normal and we don't need to do anything.

The sink at my parents' house is like that. The water drains slow, but if you turn on the disposal, it goes quick.

let it run until it is done. you can hear it - it will run clean...you can tell by the sound...it runs unimpedded.

It's not normal for the sink to fill up. you probably have a good amount of gunk in there from not running it long enough and often enough. Either that or it is underpowered.

I hope to have a V8 strapped to my next disposal with a 4 stage destruction system.

The holes inside the garbage disposal are quite small. At most 1/8" in diameter. So yes, water draining will be slower, but I've never had a problem of the sink filling up though.
