Is it normal to get better grades in school as you grow older?

When I first entered high school in grade 9, I was managing a meek 80% but as time went on, and I rose through the grades, I started getting a higher and higher grade average with the same amount of work (i.e. none, at home at least...). Now in grade 12 I find myself with a substantially higher grade average than I did in grade 9, but I don't know what I'm doing different, if anything. I do my homework, but it's mainly done at school and I seldom do anything at home related to school.

Some of my friends, on the other hand report the exact opposite. They get lower and lower grade averages as they rose through the grades. Anyone care to elaborate on this phenomenon?

If you're putting in the same amount of work, then yes, your grades would probably rise in high school. You're more efficient at studying, and more used to both the workload, and what your teachers will expect. Thus, even if you study for the same amount of time, you'll be better at extracting the necessary information. Just like with anything else, study skills improve with practice.

Because in reality they want you out of high school

Yes it gets easy - because you are learning more and more everyday

now wait till college - when they really strike you out of a high school mentality

i am in my first year of college and i actually have had TA's say

"we will grade harder than normal - this is your first class, test, year of college and its our DUTY to get you out of high school mind set.
you are all too use to getting good grades"

haha so ya, B's for me so far :(

You make good points, Whisper :) Although even for things like English, where one can't study, I still get higher grades than I did the past year. I suppose, however, it's just the fact that the English standards don't really raise and that I'm better at analysing what the teacher wants.

I know that in a lot of highschool senior year is a breeze compared to past years. Maybe you are taking easy classes? Don't be fooled though, college will fvck you up.

Heh, I guess my standards of grades have also risen along with my average. I use to think 80% was fine until I realized that it wouldn't get you into any of the renowned universities where I lived. I guess this may have compelled me to subconsciously try harder since I'm naturally competetive.

I sure hope so. I'm taking off a few years between undergrad and law school and law school and an MBA program to work and get some experience. I think that at this point I'm too burnt out and too immature to really excel in either type of a grad school program, so I'm thinking a few years on my own, without a safety net, is going to be good for me.

:p
