Is it normal for RAM to only work in 2&4 and not 1@3?

I took my ram to my friends house today where he tested out 8 gigs on his vista 64.

When i got home i put my sticks back into 1&3 b/c thats where i was pretty sure they were before. Anyways it wouldn't boot and got stuck bios each time. Motherboard showed error 52 which in the manual says, "Test all memory (clear all extended memory to 0).

I didn't know what that meant so i took the memory out and put them into 3&4 and it booted up no problem.

This kinda worries me thought b/c i was planning on going 8 gigs some day as well.....

Is that even dual channel?

I'd consult the recommended layout from Abit.

Of course that's usually 1 & 3, but it'd check the manual anyway to see what it says.

It's always a possibility that RAM slots going bad on the board. I assume you've tried one stick on each slot at a time?

Make sure to double-check your manual to see which slots are which and run dual channel. Some boards will go 1-2 3-4, some go 1-3 2-4 etc. The two 650i boards I have handled RAM slots differently and early runs of the Asus P5N had problems with the blue dimm slots. Also, make sure to update your BIOS or check for specific updates for memory configuration compatibility. For instance, my MSI would not run properly with 4 dimms installed without an updated BIOS. But yes, its not uncommon for certain slots and features on a board to be buggy/useless as mainboard mfgs rush to get their crap out the door.
