Is it normal for new SSDs to run hot?

Got a new Adata SP550 and it runs about 96F at idle and 104 in general use. My two older SATA II SSDs run a lot more cooler. Is this normal for a SATA III SSD?

30c was about what I get in the older SATA II SSDs.

BTW- This new SSD is in a laptop. But the one before wasn't as hot.

M.2 drives can run hotter depending on placement. And some will run hotter like Samsungs SM941/950/951.

And then you have the simple issue of different measurement. Just like an AMD and Intel CPU dont report the same temperature, even if they in reality are the same.

104F aka 40C is no issue at all. I would say its relatively cold.

My original 60GB Agility3, when it was in my desktop, ran in the 30C range, now it's in my old AMD Dell laptop, and runs about 35C... so I would say the confines of the laptop are responsible for the higher temps, but as Shintai point out, there also may be some variance in how temps are reported.

I think that the ambient temperature plays a role in how hot a drive gets so if it's in a confined space with little air flow then those temps are not abnormal.
