Is it normal for my hands to shake after consuming caffeine?

I had a 20 oz. bottle of Mountain Dew tonight along with two pieces of pizza (sort of a late night snack w/some friends in the dorm) around 10:30. I don't usually drink caffeine at all, and almost never have Mountain Dew, but now my hands are sorta shaking a little bit.

Is this normal for someone who almost never has caffeine?

Maybe you're suffering from a weekness after your body has been on alert from the caffeine->adrenaline.

That sounds possible...it's like my body is feeling tired but my mind is telling me I want to stay up.

I used to be a caffeine addict and sometimes i would have a large fountain coke to get me motivated to do something outside that required a lot of labor. After a bit of work I would get a reallllly weird weak feeling and I would have strange cravings for food, plus i'd be really shaky.

I'm curious if it's the combination of the sugar and the effects of caffeine that speed up the sugar rush to the point where it dies off suddenly. Just a theory though.

Why whine about it?

You want an answer? It's not normal. Normal people can take caffiene. You will most likely die.

Enjoy your last moments left....maybe with another dew?!?
jk btw ;)

Sounds pretty normal if you never consume caffeine. It's also likely if you haven't been sleeping well, or if your diet's a bit off..

You call yourself a caffeine addict, getting the shakes from a fountain coke, ISAslot? My body only notices that amount of caffeine when I've gone a few hours without any Dew or Coke, and it only notices it then because I've started withdrawal.

If you rarely take in caffeine, then it can be a jolt to the system, and you may come down from the "high" and get shaky hands for awhile, or feel nervous (oddly, the effects of caffeine and many other drugs are the same DURING the effects as well as the comedown).

A 20oz Dew isn't really an insignificant amount of caffeine. A 20oz bottle of Dew has about as much caffeine as an 8 ounce cup of instant coffee; brewed coffee has another third past that in 8oz; so basically brewed coffee has 3.5 times as much caffeine as Dew, per ounce; a tablet of No-Doz or Vivarin has 200mg, a bit over twice the 92mg in 20oz of Dew. You're not supposed to take more than one Vivarin every 3 to 4 hours. With an intolerance to caffeine, it'll probably take longer to come down from it than some other people, even though you only had one drink.

In short: yes it's normal, it's an expected side-effect of caffeine, in someone who doesn't have a tolerance built up.

some people do respond that way -- as long as you didn't mix it with anything you're good

I almost never have caffeine, and that happens to me when I do. I also feel jittery. I don't like it.

If a substance like caffeine were being submitted for approval today the FDA would probably deny it taking all the research that shows that caffeine has strong drug like effects.

Of course there are also studies saying that Caffeine throughout the day can lower the risks of type 2 diabetes.

Gotta love the conflicting studies.
