Is it normal for my fan to spin at 8000+ rpm?

I checked my fan spin rate once and it was 3000-4000.... then after I checked again it was 8000-8500? wtf? seems abnormally high to me. It's just a Tbird 1.3/266. I haven't changed or overclocked anything.

Any clues? Fan just being finnicky and gonna fail on me or what..?

is your computer screaming right now? does it sound like an industrial high speed blender? if so, then it is spinning at 8000RPM.. if not, then your comp is reading it wrong

It does sound pretty loud... much louder than the systems I build at work which run at 2500-4000.

My fan is a stock OEM fan...

Thank you, I didn't think so either. :p

So... course of action? Yank a new fan from an XP processor at work? Or wait till something focks up on this one and bite the bullet for the XP2500+ RTB? Since I do work there I would get pretty much cost + a buck or two (can get at cost but too much of a hassle to do it that way). I do have the MSI KT4V mobo so I know the CPU would be supported.

I don't want to spend extra money right now if I don't have to though, so maybe I should just go with the new fan.

A fan from an XP2000-3200+ should cool my Tbird 1.3 quite nicely I hope :p

nevermind the bios is reporting 4300rpm now .. wtf. Sounds really loud though. Maybe it's my HDs making all the noise? But even for two hard drives it seems awfully noisy. I'll try swapping the processor fan and the power supply and see if that cuts down on the noise.

bleh

makes me want to go for a severely castrated (integrated) system to cut down on noise...
