Is it normal for apps to crash

Generally speaking, regardless of platform, an app that crashes is usually the app's fault.

Without know what apps, or what platform, or any other details... it's kind of hard to actually respond constructively.

Major iOS updates routinely break compatibility with old apps. I can't play Earthworm Jim or The Act anymore.

And it's the OS maker's responsibility to ensure that they NEVER break compatibility? Is Microsoft supposed to make sure that Windows 10 works with Lotus Notes 1?

It's usually memory pressure...I've had several native Apple apps crash while using them and I know it's due to memory utilization.

On the original iPad the iOS5 often is experienced with Safari crashing. I figured this was just the 'Apple' experience.

Great thing about Windows is that it will probably work anyway (at least on the 32 bit version). Just the other day I installed some applications from the early 90s on a Win 7 32 bit OS and it worked well. With OSX you can barely get stuff to work from two years ago

Install those Windows apps on Windows 10 and see how they do.

Also, I'd like specific applications from the Mac that don't work from "two years ago".

it's hard to say whether it's the app's fault. Maybe it caused by the computer system, memory use, or other some reasons. Anyway, you could contact the app's support team for help first 🙂
