is it normal for a Voodoo 3 to run scaldingly hot??

i'm redoing an old PC and this V3 runs insanely hot even at idle. The heatsink you can't touch for more than a second and the whole card heats up. Is this normal or is the card messed up??

ok, so it's not just me. It seems to run windows fine, but damn it so hot that it seems like it'll melt all the components next to it.

The Voodoo3's were very hot runners, particularly the passively cooled V3 3000, with it's large (but thin) heatsink.

my GF3 ti 200 with passive heat sink feels the same......the PCB is bout || this close from changing state!!

The VSA-100 chips ran amazingly hot, it's almost the same chip.

yep, 3dfx debated wheather or not to put a fan on the VSA-100 or not, they were borderline of needing it.

Yeah, the V3 3000 AGP cards, at least, ran a bit on the hot side. I would recommend slapping a 486/Pentium fan on it if you are worried, and have a slot to spare next to it. (Then you can OC further, so that it gets just as hot anyways. 🙂 )

Yep, hot, and mine did fine without a fan.

I screwed a small fan to my Voodoo3 2000 as well, was able to overclock that puppy past 3000 speeds (143mhz to 170mhz IIRC). Ah... the good old days...
