a 300w power supply should be standard now. Processors and agp cards are sucking more and more power as they increase speed. I have a pIII 800 and GeForce II GTS 64mb with a 300w power supply and looking to upgrade to a 450w. You have to take into consideration all your hard drives cd rom floppy dvd cdr etc... and add on cards.

300W or higher. This is one component, where if you get quality one, can last you a long time.

but...a 300w isn't essential for his setup. for someone interested in not overclocking, standard (athlon complaint) powersupply will do.

No, a 300W PS is not necessary.

I have a 800 T-bird running at 950mhz, ABit KT7 Mobo, a Plextor 12/10/32 burner, IDE CDROM, Klipsch Promedia sound system, 2 IBM 7200 Harddisks, Sound Blaster Live, GeForce2 MX w/fan @ 210/210 and a Alpha 6035 cooler. All running 100% stable with a 235w PS. Yup, you read correctly - 235w PS!

But WHy not just spend the money for a better P.S. a 250/235 W Power Supply isn't going to be much cheaper than a $37 Antec 300W.

Certainly. But if you already own a 235/250w PS then try it first before shelling out money on needless components. A high quality 250w PS will out perform a poor quality 300w PS any day. Antec is high quality.

The only requirement is that your power supply be on AMD's list of recommended units.

These range from 225 to 300W. The issue is not really the amount of power being drawn, but the quality of the current. Even at 225W, there is theoretically enough current to power everything in a modern system. The problem only arrises when the current rises and dips because of poor switching voltage regulators in the power supply. So AMD has tested all the units on its list to make sure they supply clean, stable current on the 5V and 12V rails.

FINAL WORD!!! Get a 300W. It's sorta future proof, and no worries at all about lockups due to low power supplies. Take this from a guy who, for fun, tried to boot an ABIT KT7-RAID and Tbird 800 on a 145W power supply. haha. Ever heard of a system lock up when trying to save and exit BIOS??? :)

you SHOULD get a 300 so that you won't have to worry about it when upgrading. I just nuked a 300 and I'm currently running my system w/ 3 cdroms (2 are scsi), 1hdd and whats in my sig, on a 250w generic POS and it works just fine. But I would say it's running near it's limit. If you get the 300 or better you wont have to worry about whether it was a lack of juice that caused a bluescreen, or a config problem.... Better safe than sorry....
