is it necessary to get your wisdom teeth pulled?

I was at a dentist yesterday and saw an xray of my teeth. I noticed three impacted wisdom teeth that I wasn't aware of

I'm wondering if I should get them pulled?

I know some people that never got it taken out and they are doing fine... it hasn't bothered me at all so far
maybe it's safe to get it pulled to save trouble down the line but I would like to avoid the trouble, the swelling, the weight loss, the risk of losing some nerves, the money, and etc.

unless you want a horribly crowded mouth (if you have a smallish mouth) then yes...

Inbreeding has done this too us tho...used to have jaws that were big enough for them all IIRC...see native people everywhere.

I had only 1 wisdom tooth and at first it never bothered me. However, it began to grow a little more and then just started cutting into my cheek and became very annoying.

Luckily, my one and only wisdom tooth was the easiest to take out.

So yeah if it doesn't hurt or bother you, F it. However it can eventually grow out and become an nuisance.

if they are "impacted" then yes

the amount of damage they will do to your teeth, plus the perscription painkillers you get for having them removed, makes it all worthwhile

I'm pretty sure the reason we have wisdom teeth is because before the advent of toothpaste most peoples teeth rotted out...having a few backups coming in was a benefit.

yes, they should come out. THey can cause jaw problems later in life. Also, they can sometimes impinge on the roots of the molars ahead of them.

depends how they're growing out. If they're growing out at a bad angle and into your rear molars, you're either going to take them out now, or in 10 years when your rear molars rot away from being bored into by your wisdom teeth.

same thing for a funny angle where you have a perpetual sore from your wisdom teeth cutting your gums/cheek.

it depends on how your wisdom teeth are growing in. sometimes they need to be pulled, and usually they do (from what i've seen). i had mine pulled summer '03. i absolutely hated it :)

If they're not hurting you then there's no great reason to.

However, if they are impacted, they may push against your other teeth and kind of 'buckle' the line, ie make them go wonky. Also, check that there aren't any small holes in the gum. My lower wisdoms are impacted but are near to the surface. There's a small hole, maybe 3mm across where the gum has kind of worn away and if you stick a fingernail in there you can feel the tooth.

I feel that this exposes the tooth to the dirt in your mouth, but is very difficult to keep clean. For this reason, I'm going to have them out as dirt/bacteria will be getting in there and will eventually cause problems. Due to sod's law, you can be sure that the major toothache will start on the first day of a long holiday abroad, so I'm going to get them done while I can.

Finally, my top teeth are completely erupted and have come down normally. I'm getting these guys out too, however, as they catch on the side of my mouth when I move my jaw to it's extremities, plus being so far back they are pretty tricky to clean without gagging. As above, I want to prevent any chances of getting caries/decay in my teeth.

I'll post pics of the operation, of course.

If they don't bother you and aren't causing any problems, don't get them out.

Remember, in our enlightened system of private medicine, doctors and dentists have financial incentive to perform treatments - even if they really aren't needed.

you think the dentists get a kickback from the oral surgeon? Ask your dentist if you can see the x-rays, and ask him why he thinks you should get oral surgery. Odds are he's not pulling your leg, and he's saving you money by having them out before it screws up your mouth and gets harder to extract.
