Is it my PSU?

So my brother gives me his Gigabyte 5870. Works fine on his machine (I witnessed it firsthand.) On my machine, it gets into windows, tells me I have the wrong driver (I have a 5850), then before I can install new drivers, the screen blacks out and nothing short of a reboot gets me out. My 5850 works fine on my machine. The 5870 when put into another of my brother's machines (that had a 5770) works fine all the way up to trying to load a game (that promptly wouldn't run due to not having the right drivers) but it never blacks out. Machine is still fine after I click away the error msg.

I did break off a piece of the PCI-E slot on my mobo but I got the same results running it off the secondary slot. Is it the PSU causing this? Thanks!

There's not enough of a power difference between the 2 GPUs to cause your PSU any problem.

Can you boot in safe mode?
