ugh really out of it! when you write a letter to a married couple, do you head it with mr. and mrs. or mrs. and mr.?

I do the latter. When I was a kid it creeped out the first time I went to pick up the mail and saw a letter for my mom addressed to "Mrs John Doe" Like whoa, first her last name goes, now she doesn't even get a first name anymore, marriage must suck.

Anyway, which of the above two do you all do?

Gobadgrs, why can't you just drop the gobadism? I have strong views as far as the state of women in our society, but I don't pick on trivial things. I accept Mr. and Mrs. John Doe. (Not that I would accept the surname of my spouse if it were not appealing. )

It's "Mr. and Mrs." If the letter is very formal, it's "Mr. and Mrs. John Doe"; if it's casual, then "Mr. and Mrs. Doe" works fine.

While formally it is "Mr. and Mrs. John Doe", you might consider what makes the most sense for the couple you're writing too. I know plenty of men and women who find the the dropping of the wife's name creepy. Why not go with "Jane and John Doe" instead? It's not like the USPS is going to return the letter because the address doesn't match the naming conventions of the 19th century.

Of course if the letter's to your great-grandparents, the traditional method likely makes more sense.
