Or is Star Ocean 4 looking to be yet another uninspired, typical JRPG full of anime cliches?

I used to dig JRPGs years ago on the PS1. Now it is always the same repeated crap. When I first saw the trailer for SO4 I thought we were going to get something more fresh and serious, but later videos showed cookie-cutter-looking characters, girl-cat hybrid furries, and oh god the voice acting.

I suppose this is a rant but I feel disappointed.

I have not seen any threads here regarding the game so does anyone care about it or have any expectations they want share?

You're judging a game by screenshots and trailers. Do you think that's a particularly good way to judge a game? I don't.

I haven't followed this game much, but I hope they play to their strength which IMO is being one of the very few overtly sci-fi'ish JPRGs.

Put it this way: S-E hasn't even put a date on TLR, and that was a game that _was_ announced for the PS3. I wouldn't spend a lot of time waiting for SO4 to ever pop up.

Game looks awesome, though I haven't played any Star Ocean title yet.

Have been thinking of getting the 2 available for PSP, but I've got too many games to play as it is.

Do I need to play the previous games to understand the story?

The story is deeper than I even realized. You don't REALLY need to play the previous games, but it sure does help, and it's kind of a cool story. But I played them out of order and still really enjoyed them.

It looks good to me. Also the team that works on the always awesome FF cut scenes are doing it for Star Ocean 4.

Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1) was by far the best one, and one of my favorite RPGs for the that matter. Great game with a good story and many characters. A lot of sidequests make it a very long game as well, especially if you do the optional dungeon at the end, and the extra boss fight after that as well.

edit: just read: the main starship in the series is the calnus, same ship that claude's dad commanded in star ocean 2. awesome :)
