is it me, or this is an aweful amount of parts for Mitusbishi

for Lancer, Evolution, Eclipse, Galant, Outlander, Endeavor, Montero, and Raider, there are:

2.0L on the Lancer
2.0L turbo on the Evo
2.4L on the Eclipse, Galant,
3.0L on Outlander
3.7L on the Raider
3.8L on the Montero, Endeavor
4.7L on the raider

4 spd auto on Endeavor, Galant, eclipse (assuming the same tranmission is used)
5 spd man on the Lance
5 spd auto on the Galant, eclipse (assuming the same tranmission is used)
6 spd man on the Eclipse
CVT on the Lancer
6 spd Auto on the Outlander, Galant (assuming the same tranmission is used)

inventory cost must be huge, and the mechanics at the dealorship are going to be very confused by all this.

in contrast, (off the top of my head), Toyota has
1.5 for the yaris
1.8 for the corolla, matrix
2.4 for the camry, tC, solara, highlander, RAV4,
3.5 v6 across the board
4.0 for light trucks
4.7 for heavy duty ones,.

and that's it.... for so so much more models.

well, that thing has been around for what, 10 years already? People have to move on. the RX7 is much better car than RX8, asthetically and mechanically, but still, they can't sell the same car with the same engine that long. consider the Evo a great exception and how Mitsu engineer can continue to tweak the hell out of it for soo many years.

They are back in the black financially, and their sales have been increasing (up 23% from last year in the US alone).

I view it more a matter of turning their backs on the only thing that made Mitsubishi really successful. That 4g63 sold cars. Period. They introduced the MIVEC equipped engine which had HUGE potential only to ditch it in a year or so. Why ruin a good thing? For 2 more MPG? Do you think people who bought Evos really cared about that?

And you have figured out one of the reasons Mitsubishi is in terrible shape.

SR20DET has to go, RB26DETT has to go, 3SGTE has to go, heck, even the B-series had to go.... and they didn't pave way to better engines too. why? performance is not all that matters. Environmental concern and MPG is what sells nowadays.

I am actually looking forward to the new Lancer. the output from the 2.0L is quite impressive at 145hp. and i really want a CVT, only to be put off by their reliability since it is the first CVT Mitsubishi has ever put in the US Market. Nissan, in contrast, had the CVT for years already.

even simpler.

3.0l with the biturbo in the 335i and the v8 in the new M3

They're based on engines you already said, but considering the OP's original list, I don't think that really matters.

Those are all for Euro and Asia market. anything under 3.0 are not available in US, and most of them in that list are the basically the same thing with different tuning (we had that in the US for the E90 325 and 330).

heck, there are probably more options in diesel engines from Volkswagon Europe than all of the gas engine in Audi and VW USA combined.
