Is it me or is the 360's d-pad just awful?

I mean, apart from that, the controller is pretty great. Analog sticks have great feel and spacing, buttons are polished, pretty and have a sturdy feel, the bumpers have a nice click to them and the analog triggers are amazing but why, oh god why, did Microsoft make possibly the worst d-pad in gaming history?

I'm playing DMC4 and I'm finding it IMPOSSIBLE to properly link combos with Dante by switching styles on the fly, I always get the wrong style.

Are there any 3rd party 360 controllers with a d-pad that actually works? Damn Nintendo, everyone should be able to use the cross design.

I've read over at ArsTechnica GESC that there is some mod you can make to the controller to improve it, but I don't have the details bookmarked -- won't care until Jasper is shipping 🙂

Google "xbox 360 d-pad mod" turns up this among others: d-lightful?

It's never been a strong point, but it's way ahead of the original XBox's curvy surface D-pad. Boy now that thing sucked a fat one...least this one is a "regular" D-pad. Can't say I ever use it though...so it doesn't bother me much.

It's fine for menu/equipment selection or giving commands in games. Trying to play retro or fighting games with it can be abysmal.

It's awful, and it feels like it's in an un-natural position.

The position is fine for me. I prefer the thumbstick at the the top of the controller.

I found this: http://www.ufighterx.com/guide...dpadfix/360dpadfix.htm

It seems like an easy enough mod however the mod seems to address the d-pad not hitting the contact properly but I hate it because when I try to press right sometimes it presses down (or up presses left or right, etc, etc, etc) not because it doesn't input the command.

Do you think giving it more space will make it more responsive and more importantly ACCURATE?

I wouldn't mind except I'm playing DMC4 and playing Dante requires you to switch styles with the d-pad, it's impossible to link combos because I never get the right style when using this lousy ass d-pad.

i make typos when doing text messages and using the D-Pad more than I do if I had a qwerty keyboard. the d-pad is a joke on the 360.

I use the 360 controller for emulation because it has, in my opinion, the best d-pad you can find on a PC compatible controller. I have no problems playing retro games with it and find it much more accurate than anything Logitech offers..

Yeah it's not great. Fortunately the types of games I play only use it for minor stuff like weapon selection.

It a horrible POS. I heard that Nintendo and Sony have their d-pads patented and so MS can't use ones similar to theirs?

It's the d-pad that sucks. As a whole, the controller is great considering that most games these days use the D-pad for only minor tasks (it's usually used as four additional buttons, not as a D-pad). For the most popular genres, the Xbox 360 controller is fantastic.
