Dell Dimension 4100.
-P3- 1ghz.
-256mb SDRAM.
-TNT2 M64 32mb video (I think this is the problem)
-Win98SE

All I have running is:
Explorer
Systray
McAfee WinGauge

That takes 22% of my resources. That seems like a lot.

I'm investigating this. I'll be back.

Try removing McAfee...

Ugh, can't stand McAfee.
I installed their system utilities package a year or two back.
Ran a scan for 'problems' with my computer.
80% of the problems had to do with the McAfee software itself.
And guess what... uninstall hosed my system.

/end rant

It doesn't look bad, with the exeption of the vid card. I don't know why it would be running so low on resources. Is there a noticable effect when you game or work?

I don't run the Mcafee stuff all the time. I was just using it to see where my resources are at.

Stardard start-up config:
-Quickmail Pro
-QMnet32
-Meeting Maker
-Explorer
-Weatherbug
-Tnotify
-ICQ
-lsrv95
-seti@home
-Systray
-TB2Pro
-Mdm
-Realmon
-Mcafee Wingauge (for info)

This has me at 45%.

If I add:
-Mozilla (browser with Forums up)
-C++ 6.0

I get to 80%

I try to send an email: 86%

Dude! This sucks.

I agree, kill off Mcafee and whatever else you don't need running on bootup. Most of the stuff you listed doesnt seem like it needs to be running on boot. Also might consider moving to Win2k.

yeah, icq kills like 5% of my resources

Half of that other stuff are resource killers too. If you close those programs AFTER you boot up, you won't always get your resources back, at least not all of 'em.

You don't need to use WinGauge to see the sys resources ... just open "My Computer", click "Help" then "About". Your free resources are displayed ...

I can't get rid of that stuff. I need it while I'm at work.

Quickmail- for my email
Meeting Maker- for my schedule
Timbuktu- so I can check/control servers

Some of that stuff is for InoculateIT crap and NetOctopus that our IS guys run on the systems.

Ok, the weatherbug, Seti, and ICQ are frivolous programs. ;)

I just didn't expect a system like this to become so bogged down so easily.

The programs are still available via the Start menu. By removing them from "startup", the removed programs no longer resides in active memory sucking your resources. With that system you should be able to acheive 92-94% free resources after reboot.

You can probably drop some system resources by just using something like AIM instead of ICQ and your email. You can set up AIM to check for new email messages and inform you when new messages are available and then you start you email to read it and close it back down. Saves a lot for those using Outlook 2000.

Win 2k manages memory much more effectively than win98.
With memturbo 1.5 on win98, i usually had about 450mb free when nothing else was running
on win2k, i have about 530mb free when i have nothing else open. BTW, i have 640 total :D
