Is it me? Or does the 360 NOT support Dolby Digital over HDMI?

I am going insane trying to figure this out. Googling only confuses me more.

I bought an HDMI cable since it looks way cleaner on my TV than the VGA or Component solutions, but my SONY receiver will not output anything but 2 channel PCM.

My frikken PS3 works 100% fine...

WTF am I doing wrong??? The system is set for Dolby Digital 5.1, and nothing.

I noticed if I didn't switch my receiver to the xbox input before I turned on the xbox it would send 2 channel pcm instead of dd5.1 and require a xbox reboot to fix.

I haven't gotten it to work even once.

It's really irking me. I noticed that the official XBOX HDMI cable has a separate optical output connector. I really don't want to use that.

Wait, how is your audio connected to the 360? If you aren't using the optical output you aren't going to get dd5.1

xbox360 to Samsung HDTV via HDMI and then Samsung HDTV Optical out to SONY receiver.

My PS3 is set up the same way, and the TV passes Dolby Digital through the Samsung Optical Out fine...

I'm pretty sure with the 360 there's no dd5.1 optical going through the HDMI cable. What you have to do is have the regular video cables with the optical out that it came with plugged in at the same time as the HDMI and use the optical out directly from the console. You have to do a little work though.

Will that work if I broke the VGA cable? I am not happy with the quality of the VGA cable at all so I don't care if I break it.

What do you mean 'broke' it? If it's the same type of cable as in that guide you don't break anything, you just take off the plastic covering.

I was asking if I break my VGA one. I am trying to break it now...lol

EDIT: It worked...lol I did this and I now have Dolby Digital while using HDMI.

Why don't you run your HDMI from your game devices to the receiver, then from the receiver to the television?

That could be the problem, some TVs have issues with passing dobly 5.1 on to the receiver via their optical out. Are you sure the PS3 is sending a dolby signal and not something like 5-channel PCM?

Regardless, the optical cable to your receiver will work just as well.

thats interesting...i plugged my 360 arcade in (hdmi) and i get dolby digital 5.1 sound. i did have to set it in the options, but i do get 5.1. mine is going to a receiver, and then to a projector.

Of course. But if you had plugged it into the projector and then the receiver (eg, HDMI into the projector, projector's optical output into the receiver), I doubt it would have worked.

It is. Anything I launch on the PS3 automatically switches the receiver to Dolby Digital. Nevertheless, I am using this configuration because the receiver lacks HDMI. I am going to buy a receiver this week to remedy this.

One last idea: go to your 360 settings, switch to stereo, and then switch back to surround.

lol, that was the first thing I tried. I read that it might be a "handshaking" issue that is creeping up between my 360, TV and receiver or somthing...

I wanted a new reason to get a nicer receiver anyway.
