I'm running at 600Mhz with 256MB of RAM and I notice that when I don't use ICQ things are "waaaay" faster and snappier. Not to mention programs appear to be "hang free"
It's such a pity as nearly all my contacts use ICQ
I'm using ICQ 2000 btw
Any other whiners out there?

Oh lord! Uninstall 2000 RIGHT BLOODY NOW!. I can send you a copy of 99b if you need it. 2000 hogs resources like a mofo and has many, MANY memory leaks what leave memory unrecoverable even to programs like Memory Turbo, etc.

Never heard of this kind of problem, my ICQ 2000 is open and running in the background 24/7 and its nearly unnoticed.

The actual program itself runs fine normally apart from "mystery commands" which open ICQ windows when I am typing :(
I used ICQ99a and b which worked perfectly but I like the newer features of the new version...e.g. SMS messages, placing the pointer over a contact to view the phone number etc..
A lot of friends locally also complain about it so it's not an isolated problem.
When I had crash guard running previously is had picked up ICQ as being frozen numerous times like over 100 times when nothing else was listed as having crashed or frozen.
I'm wondering what OS do you people use that are not having problems?
I'm currently using 98SE which I feel is very unstable - by comparison to 98 regular.

I've downloaded and re-installed both the OS and ICQ and have the same problems continually.
Any other advice?

Ethernet - u seem to have the same feeling as I...could you tell the others with a "positive view" what you notice.

Gotta rush out for "dim sum" will post more info later :)

So u think no option but to go back to 99a or b then?
I'd use paltalk - but nearly everybody I know uses ICQ..... :( I've been using it for a round 3- 4 years too... :(

been using 2000b with my 98se and 256 mb of ram for quite some time without any problems. i guess keeping the number of programs open in the background to the minimal helps.

Wuming - do u get any problems at all?
I really suspect Win98 SE cobined with my Enternet 300 connection program to be causing the main problems - add ICQ 2000 and it really unsettles it.
System runs perfectly without ICQ running or connected to the internet...

ICQ99b even slowed down my system. And it took much longer to load up and that's annoying. It had a bunch of crap in it too. I could imagine 2000, just bloatware.

98A for me. If anyone needs it PM since it's kind of hard to find now.

I think this must just be one of those weird PC things that some people have lots of trouble where others do not.
When win98 first came out I was advised not to use it - as opposed to win95 - but it was totally trouble free and stable for me....which really pissed my mate off that was having lots of stress with it :)
Win98SE is hellish for me but seems to work well for others, same with ICQ - it appears?

Hey Fellas

Dont forget that there are binding programs that can use the "send an icon" feature of ICQ(all versons) where a users PC can be taken over by malicious users. The SNIDs and SUB7 programs utilize resources by sending screenshots of the users desktop back to the user who sent the program originally. That there can also be the problem with why your system slows down.

Just my .02 cents, since I had been victimized once by this type of program.

I think I have this issue sorted now!
The answer - format and remove that POS Win98SE that I had.
All is well with Win ME
It's like a new machine....98SE did not gel with my system, 98 regular was OK though?

I've got 2000a working on my laptop, but my main system had 2000b for a while and I totally agree that it uses resources like there is no tomorrow. I haven't even reinstalled ICQ on my desktop since I reformatted because I can't find a copy of 2000a (if anyone out there has one, plz e-mail me!). Basically...if you don't have a prior version to install, I'd say stay away from the current download because 2000b is just completely not worth it.
