Only in this one example though. :)

<< Unity
September 16th, 2000 12:24 AM - Anand Lal Shimpi

The Olympic Games have always left me with a renewed appreciation for just how good mankind can be. In spite of the violence, hate and all of the tragedies of the world, the unity brought together by a simple event like the Olympic Games is a strong sign, to me at least, that we as a global community can persevere.
I know this has absolutely nothing to do with hardware or the industry, but take at least some time during these next 16 days as the games go on to just realize how powerful we all are as individuals, and what we are capable of if we put aside the differences and appreciate one another. If anyone else managed to catch the opening ceremonies (if you're one of the three billion people that did ;)...), the marching of North and South Korea under one flag is an example of exactly what I'm talking about.

Good luck to all of the athletes in the games, it's their hard work and determination that is what can make these games of unity possible. Have a good night.

Anand is not NEARLY as irritating as Bob Costas. I think he's taller than Costas, too.

3 billion people watched it?? No friggin' way. That would mean one out of two people in the WORLD watched it. There's NO way one out of two people in America watched, but in the world? And I really don't see the point of him posting that on his front page. Sure it's his front page and he's free to do whatever he wants, but I don't think the name of his page is Anand politics is it?

And while on the topic, has there ever been a more gracious sports personality than Costas? He's a sports purist, and his deep knowledge of sports succombs his viewers into seeing into a light the shallow mind wouldn't touch.

Gee, now I'm starting to sound like him now...Either way, he rules, I read as many columns of his as possible, listen to his commentating, and realize I am in greatness whenever he's on TV. There's no better person out there NBC could've chosen to be the main guy at the Olympics.

Of the people in Australia watching TV Friday night, 97% were watching the opening ceremony...

Yeah? And they have what, 23 million people? I really don't see how that translates to 3 billion people world wide. You couldn't POSSIBLY think one out of every two people in the whole world watched it do you? I doubt one out of every two people in the world own a TV.

Heh, if 3,000,000 people watched the opening ceremonies...then 600,000,000 million people in china watched it...for some reason i find that hard to believe. ;)

Notice the ";)" after 3 billion people? I think he was exaggerating.:)

Does Mr. Costas know a lot about sports? Yes. Too much? Yes. Does he let this pervade his broadcasts? Yes. Is it extremely annoying? HELL YES.

Anyone with a good voice and the ability to make relevant comments would have been better, IMO of course...

Why are you complaining? If I understand what you're saying, he knows too much about sports? What does he do that makes him annoying? He makes insightful detailed comments, sue him. Is answering your own questions highly annoying? Yes, very much so.

What would you rather have him do? Simplify things, pretend he knows nothing about sports, say things at a level of someone who's never seen a sporting event before? If you're dwindling on him for being too much of a purist, too passionate about things, then, by all means, he's 100% guilty of it.

Hey GB, I think some of the people hate Bob Costas because he does tend to talk a lot during the shows, and although he does give insightful details of the sports he cover(and I do enjoy many of his comments just as much as you do), it does sometimes take away something from the games themselves.

I am not going to agree or disagree w/ that, but you don't have to get all defensive about it. ;)

I just HATE people who COMPLAIN all the time without any quality statements or backup. It's the whole "I don't like things that suck, and they suck because I said so" type of attitude. People that are too shallow to see the whole surface yet complain about it through total ignorance just annoy me. I've never (or rarely at least) said I hated something, or that something is bad without knowing the full detail of it. People that do otherwise are the ones that for some reason get into my skin.

Maybe that's why I like Costas so much. He tells the whole picture from an unbiased standpoint, he makes bad moments good, good moments great, and great moments memorable.

Why is it annoying? I'm trying to watch the end of an NBA finals game but I hear him yakking endlessly about how this is similar to some other game, how players have gotten better, or some other barely relevant drivel.:)
