Is it legal to "reserve" a parking space on the street?

using garbage cans / traffic cones.

when I was cruising my neighborhood for parking tonight, I saw at least three places where people put out garbage cans or traffic cones to save parking spaces for themselves in front of their houses. I left them alone because I found parking fairly close to my apartment, but in the future, if parking's tight, I'm perfectly within my rights to put the garbage cans on the curb where they belong and park my car in the space they tried to save for themselves, right?

because of all these stupid snow banks left over from the blizzard, parking has been a total PIA for the past couple days.

edit: spelling

i don't really see what they could charge you wiht, i'd just be scared of someone taking a brick to my car :)

edit: if you were to remove the cones and what not

Don't know about other states, but here in CA street/curb parking in residential areas is considered public parking. Can't 'save' spots in front of your house. If someone parks in front of your house and you don't want them there, tough luck.

Pretty sure it is not legal anywhere.

I remember reading an article here in the Boston Globe how the city was cracking down on this practice. The reality is though it is often a neighborhood or unwritten rule, and perhaps you would receive a bit of flak if you parked in someone's "spot".

In my town it's illegal. It's also illegal to smash out people's windshields after they move your chairs and park there, but that doesn't stop the a-holes around here. It's tradition!

If it snows a lot and I had to spend 3 hours digging out a spot, I would definately reserve a spot and be very angry if someone stole it. angry enough to let all the air out of your two curb side tires, but not enough to do damage to the car.
