Is it legal to rebrand Dell computers as my own?

Esentially I would be selling "modified" Dells.

I don't want the end product to be affiliated with Dell in any way. Of course it would still have Dell written all over it but I would put a stick for my company on the computer saying the Dell warranty and support is invalid and to call my company for any warranty issues.

Why do I want to do this? Because there is no cheaper way to get a case, cpu and in particular Microsoft windows that just buying a premade comptuer from Dell.

As long as you don't hide the fact that they are Dells I don't think it's a problem. But then you aren't really 'rebranding' them.

Seems like a hassle having to go through you in order to get Dell to replace something on the computer that the client bought.

I say just resell the Dell systems with a decient margin and then sell some type of "support contact" that will allow you to support their computer, so refer them through Dell to get any parts replaced that have gone back.

Talk to dell - they sell whitebox systems that you can easily and legally brand as your own....now I dunno what the pricing is but I know they do it.

Illegal. You could always become a Dell 'partner' (or whatever they call it) and sell Dell stuff legally, though. You couldn't rebrand it, though.

If you want to brand stuff as your own, you need to have a specific agreement to do that, or just buy the parts yourself and put the machines together.

If you're actually changing the product, yes it's legal depending on who you're selling it to. If you're selling to the federal government, they want to see lots of bullsh|t documentation confirming each manufacturer's approval that you can sell them their product. Anyway, it's the same idea that you go buy an Asus motherboard, Intel CPU, Kingston RAM, Asus video card, Seagate HDD, blah blah blah.

If you were to buy those parts, put them together, and sell them, you're not legally required to call it "CitizenDoug's Asus Intel Kingston Asus Seagate blah blah Computer" are you? Of course not. As long as you're physically changing the product, you're becoming what is called a VAR or Value Added Reseller. But, like I said, it depends on who you sell to.

I guess as long as you don't just turn around and sell the same exact thing, and the changes are worthy ones. Its like companies who work on specific cars and make them better. As long as you acknowledge you're selling Dell systems.

Although it would be nice to know how you're making the systems different.

Why is it illegal?

There are a million companies that sell modified Honda Civics? You don't see Honda suing them..

People modify all sorts of things. I'm not trying to use Dell's warranty.. I would offer my own. They won't need to call Dell for parts because I will supply the parts. Dell is only supply the box which I'm modifying and voiding the warranty.

And about being "blacklisted." My understanding is that the poeple that are blackliested are trying to resell Dell's and transfer the warranties.

And finally I doubt I am actually going to do this I am just figuring out of I COULD do it. There is no law again thinking about stealing a car only stealing it. I am thinking about doing this but finding out if it is legal first.

From what I heard Dell tends to discourage people from reselling thier computers. That is why you here all this talk about "blacklists"

Now this is interesting. It would be just what I was looking for. However I doubt they would have the killer discounts you find on the hot deals forums available..

I would imagine that you would need an OEM licensing agreement, but I wouldn't know as I'm not a lawyer. If you are being serious about this, you should already have consulted with one.
