Is it just me?

Or does it seem like the online community for console gaming is just getting more and more unbearable? I remember the days when i could play pub matches and have a decent team, but now every time i play it seems like everyone is just worthless.. i would play with JUST my friends but that isn't always an option seeing as how we do have lives. I guess gaming will never be the way it was :/

I don't see it as much worse than it ever was.

I'm NOT a big multiplayer fan at all, but I used to play Jedi Knight, Rainbow Six, and X-Wing Alliance, among others, back on the MSN Gaming Zone in the late '90s.

There were a SUBSTANTIAL number of douchebags and assholes even then.

I think the difference might be that there are a lot more casual players now, and a lot younger kids. Back then, it was mainly nerds being dicks to each other and trying to "out nerd" one another.

But the end result was the same. Granted, this isn't console specific, but communities usually share these traits.

It's the single biggest reason I have little to NO desire to play online with anyone I don't know. Period.

Years ago i stopped playing console games and played only pc stuff with my buddies, and some solo games, but it gets expensive having to buy performance graphics cards and processors every year or two so i could run a game at a decent frame rate. I just wish gaming was more underground than it is now! I still love my xbox for games like umvc3 and halo campaign, but idk if it will be worth paying the price for the next generation consoles.

This is the reason why I only play with friends. I cant stand the 12-15 yr old kids talking a big game. I like to call them eThugs. If I can party up with friends ill just mute everyone.

I play with my friends when i can but it's not always an option

I think you are exaggerating a little there. I still have my Q6600 and 460 GTX SE (gimped version) with the processor being almost 5 years old and I can game fine. The online community used to be a exclusive group of people who actually loved playing games online when internet wasn't as widely available. Now, everyone including 12 years old or people who suck are online.

Ehh maybe, but back when i was playing pc exclusively was when they were releasing games like bioshock, oblivion, and crysis and i just didnt want to shell out the money for games i could play on xbox with no problem.

Yup, Q6600 and gtx460 here too. I would probably still be using my old 8800gtx if it didn't die on me.

Its never been any different. There were always noobs who didnt know wtf was going on. I dont think I've ever played a satisfying game of BF1942. All I remember is being shot in the face over vehicles. Shitty players and TKing was just as bad in every online game since the first.

Not only that, I remember constantly being called a n****r and told to go f**k myself back in the quake 1 days. Its just back then, you couldnt hear their voice, and didnt really know who it was on the other end.

You're romanticizing the past.

Yeah, communities are always specific to games too.

I remember how bad counter-strikes community was, and that game is pretty old.

Same with D2.

On the other hand, most people in EQ were polite and well rounded individuals.

Really? The PC in my sig below is still playing all recent games on and offline. I havent bought a video card in 3 years. Or any other hardware. IMO it is probably cheaper than an xbox 360 as I have replace nearly 4 360s with new ones once they died in the same time frame as I have had the system below.

I never game online for this exact reason. Too many douchbags with more testosterone than brains. If I play with other people, they're friends in my living room with me.

Online multiplayer is a waste of time. There has been a huge influx of cheaters in the past decade because the people who make the cheats are willing to sell them to average joe, who feels like he cannot compete without them. Thus you end up with many games where one guy has as many kills as half or 3/4th of the other players in the room combined, and cheater guy usually runs all the good players out of the room because they know he is breaking the physics of the game. Thus you end up with a ton of rooms that have one mega cheater and a dozen noobinators.

Beyond that, yeah people act like fuckwads online. I don't even let my kids play online because people pretend like high school football players in a locker room and devs are too stupid to put a mute all option in the menu & options (like a universal mute in the settings would be great).

I really hate online for the fact that a lot of people have a terrible internet connection, or they are just spammers/ragerquitters/noobs etc... I, for some reason, still go online, that it might improve. It never does. Playing SSBB and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in lag, or with ragequitters might just be the most frustrating thing ever... >.>

i would hate playing online too if i was playing on the wii, especially a fighting game lol.

it's not the terrible connections you are seeing, it's the shitty online infrastucture of the wii.
