Is it just me...

I don't know about other shooters as this is the first I've played with this card, but I get 17fps average on very high settings and it feels smooth 99% of the time. I've been playing it like that so far and I love it.

Why does everyone need such high framerates from their cards?

because you can't aim properly at such low FPS.

Of course, in crysis the enemies have so much health that it makes no sense to use guns. You choke them to death or hit them with a crate (throwing a crate = instant kill). And for those two attacks it does not matter indeed.

Same here. It was dropping into the low 30s for me during the outdoor alien fights later on and I found it annoying enough that I dropped down my resolution for those parts.

I think low framerates have become a norm these days, even on consoles. Just look at MGS4 on PS3...easily drops to the mid teens during cutscenes and heavy battle scenes.

But yes it's a bit more irritating on the PC since:

1) You spend a lot more on a PC
2) PC games don't have the same production values vested in the story, the graphics are the main selling point...

I need 37-45 minimum with about 55ish average (at least) for a FPS game. Not going to get that with the 9600GT I have now, so Crysis will have to wait until my next upgrade, which will be in about another year.

It's not only you. With AA on I played through at similar FPS without any trouble aiming or anything. A friend of mine who observed for a few minutes was amazed that I was capable of playing at such low FPS and had to turn of AA before he was able to try, but I was totally fine.

Completely agree. In most shooters, anything under 30 FPS is unplayable for me, and I start really feeling the lack of smoothness once it goes below 45. In Crysis, I played through the entire game with framerates in the mid-low 20s, and it was completely playable. Maybe it was the motion blur, or maybe the framerate was really consistent, or something. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but that game definitely "feels" much smoother than other games at the same framerate.

For shooters anything less than 50FPS is just unbearable for me. It makes it too hard to aim. I usually aim to get 60+ FPS though for the best playable experience

17FPS better be fine. I'm replaying Crysis on delta on my smoking P4 3.2E (Prescott) & X1950PRO 512 @ 10x7 and med-high settings

BTW it's easy to kill the NV troops with headshots, even on delta.

I found the game to be fine at average 30fps dropping to 20's from explosions and such

I've noticed that 25fps on my gtx 260 seems much smoother than 25fps on my 4850 I had before. Not sure if it's cause I can load more into memory or what, but unless I hit one of the texture streaming points in mid-level, it's pretty smooth all the time.

I averaged 26FPS in Crysis and thought it was very playable. 17 seems kind of low to me though.

I am happy any time I'm getting consistently above 30 FPS. Anything under about 25FPS looks too much like a slide show IMO.

there is no certain magic number that feels right like several of you people are claiming. every game is different and Crysis can be played at much lower framerates than most other shooters and still feel smooth. everybody that has played Crysis knows this. that being said 17fps is still to low for most people including me to be comfortable with.
