...or is English a dying language?
I mean I don't speak to good (<-- on purpose for the humorless) but some of the posts I read here are such gibberish that it embarrasses me to be a member here.
Is there a point where we adulterate the language so much that it becomes worthless?
Or will we all get so stupid that it all seems normal?

English has evolved constantly throughout the centuries, English from 1200AD would sound pretty strange to any of us, just a continuation, that being said, most people in th3 wurld d0n't sp34k l1k3 th1s.

Unfortunately someone thought it would be a good idea to dumb down the melting pot so everyone could compete rather that everyone rising to set standards. You get what you bargain for and it gets worse every decade. I am glad I am not young.

In another thread, Random Variable posted some gibberish about a certain number of things happening.
I posted that the answer was 42.
In this thread, he posted a non sequitur and tried to be funny. He failed but there will be responses that agree (or concur) with him by members who don't understand simplest of communication skills.
Is Amerkia doomed to failure or will the Matrix save us?

As a person, I am abhorred at what has become of language in the recent 2 decades. As a mod, I wish I could ban people for misuse of language. Random Variable would be my first victim since we already got sparky.

Using proper grammar in public discourse is like remembering to put pants on before going to work.

It improves your credibility considerably.

If your panties are in a bunch over this why don't you quit being a fucking cry baby and do something about it? Instead of pointing and laughing at people who fail English while sitting on your ass in the front yard, why don't you correct them and tell them how to effectively apply their corrected English in everyday situations?

I think it's pretty clear that a big bloat like you gets all their self-confidence from these forums so I won't expect a change; but who knows, maybe the "Elite Member" title will encourage you to post something of content rather than the garbage you regularly put out.

Yeah, so many people have such horrible writing skills, and they often don't use proper grammar while speaking. We surely live in the dying years of the English language. I wish it could be more like 400 years ago, when the majority of the peasant populace couldn't read or write at all. Wait...

Blame text messaging on cell phones. It was pretty bad when they invented IM, but txt msg on cell just brought to a whole new level of low standards in English.

Ps. Internet forums suck too.

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."

That said, speaking properly can help boost people's perception of you, assuming they themselves are fluent.

Excellent idea! Allow me:

  1. Fail "at English" -- for proper English, kids, remember, prepositions are your friend.

Your use of the word "bloat" here is colloquial. It is not proper English.

"All of their self-confidence." Again, prepostions are your friend! But simply saying "their self-confidence" is the best stylistic choice.

"Substance" is the better choice here.

I DO admire your proper use of the semi-colon, though! Trying to tweak olds' tail with your ill-advised and logically suspect rant wasn't your best idea this week, however.

Perk, MercenaryYoureFired is using the semicolon incorrectly. The only proper use of a semicolon is in programming; everyone who programs in JavaScript knows that, including you.

The Internet is a great force for mediocrity, both exposing it and creating it. Luckily, I don't think other safeguards are going away any time soon. Try getting a professional job with the literacy skills of a 25th-percentile ATOT poster, for instance. Also, blogs seem to have largely diminished in hype and significance compared to several years ago, and there seems to be a corresponding swing back to edited authorities on the Internet, a good trend.

I still shudder at the increased rate of corruptions which continue to find their way into general use at an increased rate, partly due to the Internet. The recent "sherbert" thread may be a good example; I don't remember that corruption being so prevalent when I was a kid. Maybe someday "definately" will be accepted by dictionaries (shudder).
