...Or does maybe 1 in 3 multi-cd installations actually work properly? I've had to restart the F.E.A.R. installation 2 times now... It asks for the next CD, then Windows tells me it's the wrong CD. Sometimes out of the blue Windows will tell me it's the wrong CD. I'm rapidly losing my patience, and this is far from the first game to do this ><.

Most likely because the videogames are getting more and more strict copy protection mechanisms. The sad part is the people that pirate the games have an easier time installing and using them than the people with the real games most of the time.

Most publishers don't think about the consumer.

Do you have anything installed that may be considered in a copy protection program? Some go as far as requiring you to uninstall Nero, cd-mounting tools, etc. It's getting out of hand really.

It's probably got something to do with the specific copy protection used on the media. It's not uncommon for particular drives to have issues reading some of the copy protection schemes used with newer games.

The only thing I have is Nero, but I'm not removing that just to install a game (although it seems to be working now, I'm on disc 5 without any errors). It generally seems to be Sierra/Vivendi and Ubisoft games with which this happens (I know Ubisoft is overaggressive on the copy protection front, I could see Sierra being the same), so that certainly could be cause. Annoying nonetheless >:\.

well lately all the new games are being released on cd at a lower price and they found a way to jack up the price on dvd versions calling them "special editions" etc throwing in a few minor extras and raising the price $10 to $15 more. i always buy new releases at fry's and usually save around $15 each but the special editions aren't usually on sale so it's the cd version for around $35 or the SE for around $60...

yeah, that really pisses me off. you can get the 20 disc cd version for $45 but the 1 dvd version has to be the special edition version for $55

they need to make, cd version, dvd version, and then a special edition version.

the dvd version of some games is hard to find too.

although, if you don't have a dvd reader (at least) by now, get with the times, they cost like $20...

to answer the original question, i have never had a problem with a multiple cd install
