Is it just me or does barnes and nobel NOT have books on any Linux operating system besides redhat? I went into a barnes and nobel yesterday looking for a book on something else but as usual I'm drawn towards the computer section and this time looking for a linux book but only could find one on redhat. It frustrated me because it would have been nice to see books on different versions of linux. Is there any particular reason WHY they only had them for this particular operating system (version/distro)?
 
Because the percentage of customers who walk into your typical Barnes & Nobles are not computer geeks like you.

Go to a computer store if you want other linux distro books.
 
don't they have a general "linux for idiots" book?

I mean there isnt that much difference between distros. err. uh. they use the same kernel. you know what i mean.
 
Just use google and some good forums and usenet. Just about any question you will ever have has probably been answered already.
 
Well I mean I have used linux before but I want to actually install it on a system and try it out. I was sadly disappointed to see how few books there were and as I was browsing, I looked and saw HOW MANY FRIGGEN Windows XP books there were but they were mostly elementary and I already had one of them (most useful I could find). What was even sadder as I soon realized is that there was only 1 narrow bookcase of linux related books and 4 isles dedicated to windows xp. Though I did get a book called "linux toys" and what it does is show you some cool things you can do with old systems with linux on them. One in particular was "how to make a digital frame", and showed the steps with an old laptop. Also as I was looking around I found an A+ Cert book and thought I should read it to see how difficult the subject matter of A+ material is. Turns out it was fairly basic stuff that I already knew and I couldn't believe how large the book was (1000 pages!).

It's just a sad sad day for barnes and nobel.🙁

Download Knoppix, burn and enjoy. You don't even need to install it but certainly have the option to.
