Actually, no. A few of the evangelical nutcases starting getting involved in the Republican party starting with Nixon but ramped up to full speed with Reagan. It's been downhill since.

Wait are you implying Nixon was an Evangelical nutcase? The dude was a Quaker.

Wasn't there an episode in which a Republican congressman had to apologize to Rush Limbaugh after criticizing him? I think that was a few years ago, but I was downright appalled by that incident. I mean, a U.S. representative (or was it a senator? I don't remember) who was elected by his constituency can't stand up to a lunatic radio (yes, RADIO) personality even on a principled ground, then you know there is something deeply wrong with that territory.

And the ongoing list of pathetic and insulting list of Republican female talking heads - Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Maggie Gallagher, Michelle Bachman,.. that's another phenomenon to study.
You may be thinking of this, where RNC Chairman Michael Steele apologized to Limbaugh for referring to him as an "entertainer": http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/...apologizes-to-limbaugh-in-flap-over-his-role/

It's you.

Things like gay marriage and other social/religious issues were MUCH more in play in elections in years past. Not so much in this one.

Fern

Yeah but seriously discussing whether everyone should be afforded the same rights (and as established in Loving Vs Virginia, marriage is a RIGHT) in a modern western society seems awfully outdated.

Anti-abortion is even worse, the outlawing of the procedure would effectively make every pregnant woman responsible for her fetus under the control of the government, that is the ONLY way to enforce it.

Now, sure, idiots like Santorum won't win, the extremists aren't a large enough group to let the US version of the Taliban become a political reality but it scares the sheit out of me that they exist at all.

Then there is Ron Paul, who also cannot win but still have people who are ok with leaving it up to the states? Have you BEEN to Georgia or Alabama? They would re institute slavery and hang gays from every tree if they could do so legally (now they just scare them into silence instead).

Then there is Mitt... because Huntsman is WAY to sane to be their candidate and he has no chance of winning.

The world is watching and we are scratching our heads, religion has nothing to do with government.

You want to know is "nutty", its supporting an outdated royal family that contributes nothing of importance to society.

What I would like to see, is queen elizabeth at the local grocery store bagging groceries for minimum wage.

Ahhh, the comeback from the man who is not just nutty, he doesn't even have the balls to stand up for his own nation.

I'd like to see Ellie do that too but not until we have extracted every cent we can get from the tenths million overweight twats from the US who admire our Queen so much that they want to see her in real life.

Get back to me when you grow some balls, son.

That phenomenon is easy to understand. The news channels would all die out if they only showed level headed people talking about common things. They need to excite people either to anger or to agreement via people who do abnormal things.

It is all about entertainment, and all of our 24 hour news channels are filled mostly with entertainment...the boring and common news is usually shown in a ticker at the bottom.

As a former conservative, I think so. The party has developed a distinct anti-intellectual culture ever since the days of William F. Buckley came to a close. It has lost its intellectual soul, and thus relies more in appeals to emotion to promote its "side", whatever that may be at the time.

"I didn't leave the party.....it left me...."

Have you ever been down here? We most certainly would not. If you realy believe that, then you know nothing of the modern South. However, we would likely have abortion and gay marriage outlawed the second it reverted back to the states. I fear that happening since I still live here. States' rights sounds pretty rosy if you don't live in a dysfunctional state (Yes, AL is dysfunctional...have you seen our constitution?), which is why RP has a lot of supporters.

Someone from England wants to complain about politics in the US, while supporting a parasitic monarch?

What kind of answer did you have in mind?

US politics might suck, but British politics suck worse.

You ever watch their House (or whatever they call it)? British politics rock from what little I have seen, their politicians actually have a set of balls.

Perhaps i exaggerated a tad to make a point, the point being that they would never be awarded rights that others believe belong to WASPS only.

States rights are just a way to circumvent the bill of rights and the 14't amendment.

Who cares though, Ron is not going to be a candidate.

Besides, how the hell would you deal with abortions and gay marriage from state to state, "now i'm married, now i'm not, now i'm married, now i'm not" when jumping across the state borders? And if abortion is illegal in one state but other states don't consider women lesser human beings who have no rights to their own bodies, what would they do if she goes out of state to have her abortion and then returns?

It's not just stupid, it's so stupid that you might as well split every state into a separate nation and institute special border protection because if you don't, it will never work.

Yeah, but for people who don't care about reality we are "ruled by the Queen" and for those kind of people, no amount of reality will ever change their delusions.

I believe there are three on this forum, Texastwat, Canoshit and Rabidmongrel.

Oh, and i believe you are thinking of the house of commons.

Anyone can enter and make their point.

We are a democracy by the people, not by our politicians.

Perhaps I should re-check my hyperbole meter, because it seems we are in agreement here.

True, long gone are most classic conservative intellectuals; sadly, and partly due to Rovian politics, there is now little more than fear and hate framing most conservative political debate.

They get more insane by the day. Go to fark.com's politics tab and read about what the republican presidential candidates say on a daily basis. It is mind boggling. We have a lot of hicks in this country they have to pander to.

That's why their base is shrinking...people are starting to wake up.

Imagine if there was no religious right, then Huntsman could have stood a chance and you could have had a decent presidential candidate to stand against Obama...

As it is, not even Republicans like Mitt and he's the only one that is electable.
