Is it just me or is the media driving the twitter frenzy?

Everytime I watch the news, I see multiple references to twitter making it seem like the entire world has been swept up by this new craze. Yet I don't know a single person who twitters, and none of my friends know anyone who twitters either. In fact I don't know a single person who thinks twitter is a good idea.

It seems to me that the media was blindsided by all of the web 2.0 stuff and never really caught on to making facebook or youtube or any of those things applicable to their business model. And them comes along twitter, which gets a little buzz and the media decides that they will not be left in the dust this time and they will keep up with the current culture. So now every news station and every website has something about following them on twitter, but yet no one that I've talked to thinks twitter has any reasonable lifespan and is just a passing fad.

Ideas?

I agree. The local Fox anchors each announce their Twitter address at every newscast (10 pm) at least 2 times.

I still don't know wtf the point of Twitter is.

I stopped watching CNN because of this crap and all the rest of their stupid web stories. Stop trying to be relevant to kids or the social networking crowd, and just cover national/international news. Most of this twitter crap is unverifable, and yet I hear twitter this and twitter that every 5 seconds. I'm usually pretty tolerant of this stuff, but the hype surrounding twitter seems highly artificial, i.e. I don't anyone that gives a damn about twitter except to complain about all the hype. Even typing the word "twitter" is making me annoyed at myself.

I thought it was bad when a couple years ago the media started to use the word "blog" every 10 seconds and invent words like "blogsphere", but that actually seemed to be partly founded on people actually making/using blogs. Twitter is useless and annoying.

I have no idea why people think others want to know what they are doing every second of the day.

It's easy to not think and just post annoying drivel.
True, we have the equivalent "neffing" on ATOT, but most people that do it offer real opinions and arguments from time to time.

The war is slowing down.

Britney is slowing down.
She has no real replacements yet. (Miley hasnt been caught with three dicks in her mouth, though time will tell)

Obama hasnt really done anything to cause mass panic. (The Republicans want us to believe otherwise, but they cant get the media to back them up, yet.)

North Korea isnt interesting enough to report on a daily basis.

The new iPhone is still just an iPhone, and can only get so much attention.

Yes. The media is bored and they need something to discuss. And because people only pay attention to the news for about 30 seconds, they will only hear about Twitter.
Which means it will get more popular as people want to learn about it.
Amazing that hype is all you need for a successful product or service.

I bet Apple wishes they had invented it.

wow twitter can be fun.

If you have a data plan on your phone, it's meaningful. Like snap a pic and twitter. That's useful. Updating your status only? ehhh lame. you can do that for facebook already.

For 80% of young people who update through the web... Uh you have facebook already.
