I have an easier time getting in and out at a Lowes and more importantly at every Lowes I have been to (in multiple states as well) the employees at Lowes were much better trained or otherwise knowledgeable when it came to answering questions.

Home Depot has gone the way of Wal-Mart and got rid of their experienced sales staff and replaced them with entry level kids that don't know anything.

Heck my dad used to do commercial sales for Home Deport and him and the rest of his department all got canned and replaced with some kids making a third of their salary. The result? The commercial accounts left Home Depot and went to other business.
Why did this happen across the board in every Home Depot? Coincidentally Home Depot got some former Wal-Mart executive as their COO or some other high ranking executive officer.

Personally I found that most employees at Lowes really just do want to help the customers. Home Depot wants to make a quick buck.

Nearly infinitely better because there are no Lowes stores anywhere near me.
This shall change next week once I'm back in college though.

Home Depot is the better of the two, but in reality they BOTH suck.

I've had to spend entirely too much time trying to find someone actually working in a given department at both.
And once you do find someone, they really don't know much about the department. It's the Walmart of the hardware world.

I've had good luck with the smaller Ace Hardware stores. The people there generally know what they're talking about, though the prices are higher than the big chains, sometimes 2x more. And some of the inventory is very outdated, particularly the compact flourescent bulbs. I was in an Ace Hardware store today, and some of their CFL's had dust on the yellowing packages. Really really old styles too.

Yeah, we have a few of those small stores around. I actually prefer them for the small odds and ends, even though you pay more, and the selection isn't as good. At least they have it without hunting through 200,000 square feet to find it, and the people (generally) know what they're talking about and selling.

I never go to Home Depot because Lowes is closer however I have heard that Hope Depot has better prices so maybe it would be worth the extra 10 miles.

Personally, I prefer Home Depot. They're cheaper for most things, it's closer to my house, and their staff seems friendlier, at least in my city.

At my Lowes, the staff is horrible, no one has a clue what they're doing. Last year when I was trying to buy a garage door, I waited more than three hours at lowes because of stupid idiot employees stalling and making stupid mistakes. I should've gotten a garage door elsewhere though. And in particular, my lowes store isn't any cleaner than home depot... both stores are almost equally dirty, and the layout feels almost identically the same, save for a few things (like at my lowes, they store fencing materials outside, and home depot stores them inside...or might have them mixed up).

Of course, everybody's experiences will be different depending on what employees work at the stores.

The little stores are especially good for the nuts and bolts selection if you don't want to have to buy a plastic pack of 10 if you only need two. Or if you need 100, they give a nice discount. Some of them even have these really tiny nuts and bolts, which can be good for custom chipset/GPU heatsink mounts. :)

You must not do a lot of various stuff.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Lowes here at least has a lot more selection on stainless and high torque rated hardware.

Home Depot has better wood selection.

Wood is something I'd never buy at either store unless it was for a very rough project like my garage cabinets.

Home Depot < *

Any time I go to HD I spend 30 minutes looking for someone to help me, 20 minutes waiting for that person to find someone who can actually help me, etc. We don't havge Lowes by us open yet but I far prefer Menards. Any time I buy the exact same item at HD or Menards, Menards is ALWAYS cheaper.

i prefer lowes also compared to the home dilemma. just cleaner, more comfortable atmosphere. home dilemma always seems to have a bunch of crap on the floor cluttering up the aisles/check out lanes.

It's a hardware store, not Circuit City.

Lowes brands are so much better... but then again I am not into disposable junk.. this new generation likes stuff that falls apart in 3 or 4 years so they can go shop some more.

Velspar >>>>>>>>>> Glidden and Behr
Troy-bilt >>>>>>>>>>> TorASH
Mapei >>>>>>>>>>>>> Laticrete

Plus HD's website sucks 14" donkey... they don't even have their tile and grout etc etc on the site.. WEAK

BRILLIANT!!!

And here I thought the housing market downturn would lift the improvement stores as more people would remodel rather than move.
I lose at the stock market...
I should just stick to craps.

I prefer Lowe's, but Home Depot is much more convinient to get to (location, location, location). Either dosen't really meet all my needs. For all my home improvement needs, I head to City Mill, especially the city mill on Nimitz Hwy. that place has all the home furnishings and odds and ends that Home Depot or Lowes lacks. Usually better prices, too...which is surprising.
