I'm a contractor, and I would NEVER buy material from Home Depot. It's fine if you need a few items, but when I'm putting together a package for a room addition or large remodel I can't afford Home Depots "low" prices. Most of the people who work there know nothing about construction, and they make far to many mistakes or send me lumber that isnt fit to be used as firewood.
The Lowes where I live is so much better than HD it's almost a joke, so far everyone I've spoken with was able to help me, and was well dressed and polite. In the HD they all try to avoid eye contact so you won't ask them anything, and many are covered with tatoos and where those stupid pants that they always have to hold up with one hand.
Home Depot, in a word, blows.

If you're buying decorator items like lamps, fans, appliances, then it's lowes. For everything else HD owns lowes.

I'm sure all you know you can buy coupons off ebay for both stores.

In this town, Home Depot owns Lowes. While Lowes might have a better selection of their "Made in China" crap, their employees suck. Most know nothing about the department they work in, (except perhaps the drapery lady :roll;) bot otherwise, it's like they hire the ones Home Depot rejects. Home Depot's lumber selection is far better, and while prices are compteitive with Lowes, the quality seems better as well. However, when we built our patio cover a couple of years ago, (12X42) we bought all our lumber from one of the local lumber yards, and saved several hundred $$$ on materials over both of the Big Box stores. About the only time I'll go to Lowes is if HD is out of something I need.

In my area, Lowes has a wider selection of daylight bulbs and HEPA filters, which is the only thing I ever buy there or at HD. So yeah, I prefer Lowes for that, but the HD across the street seems to be cleaner, but Lowes seems to be better organized in where everything's located throughout the store.

Frank Ricard (Will Ferrell): I told my wife I wouldn't drink tonight. Besides, I got a big day tomorrow. You guys have a great time.
College Student: A big day? Doing what?
Frank: Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, and Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

When I worked for a contractor we usually got our wood from Home Depot, because you can pick the pieces you want. When we ordered it from the lumber yard and they picked it for us, we inevitably ended up with some that we couldn't use. Home Depot also lets you return unused wood.

We got most of our stuff directly from supplies, but Home Depot filled in the gaps.

Personally I prefer Lowe's, but that's because of negative experiences at Home Depot and Lowe's is a mile down the road from my house.

Each one has its pros and cons. I have found stuff at Lowes better and sometimes better at HD. I don;t limit myself to just one.

QFT. We have both about 500 yards from each other. I shop at both. Can't choose just one because they both have things (or better items) than the other does.

It is nice to hand pick lumber, but it would cost me at least $90 an hour to pick and load the lumber at HD. The lumber yard I deal with has lumber clearks that know wood, so I almost always get a good load, and anything I don't like they will take back, no questions asked. Also, try going into HD and asking for a 6x14 20 feet long...

Is this a regional opinion. My relatives swear by Lowe's on the east coast. Over in so. cal, Home Depot rocks. I get frustrated at Lowe's looking for things. The two locations I frequent have poor employee skills and service. Checkout is a nightmare.

I'm probably a HD and Lowes rookie because I can't tell them apart. Same store layout, similar stuff but Lowes is blue and HD is orange.

I like Lowes better too. There always seems to be a Lowes near Home Depot, Lowes has stuff in stock, HD never does, and HD NEVER has people to help you on the floor (really ticks me off when I'm trying to buy wood :| ).

I miss Home Depot.

There is only a Lowes nearby so I have had no choice but to buy from there.

It's OK but I prefer Home Depot.

There are some things I do in fact like better at Lowes which is why I wish both were close by. Home Depot is missing out on a boatload of money not having a store in the area.

Lowes owns Home Despot.

For example:

Bought a flourescent overhead work light for the garage at HD. Came in a dozen pieces, presumably so they could fit in a thinner box, that after an hour of assembly didn't even work and was rickety as hell. Took it back, went to lowes and picked up one already fully assembled for the same price that has been rock solid.

Looking at tables saws. HD sells Ridgid and Ryobi. Lowes sells Jet and Delta.

Cabinet clamps. Lowes sells Bessey and HD sells Jorgies.

Outdoor power tools, Lowes sells Husqvarna and HD sells Toro and Ryobi.

No contest.

Home Depot is the better of the two, but in reality they BOTH suck.

I've had to spend entirely too much time trying to find someone actually working in a given department at both.

Home Depot is a pain in the butt to special order anything... my parents have waited over a month for them to come out and look at our garage door to order a new one... we gave up and went with lowes.

Lowes beats HD around here....Not only are the staff more helpful, the prices are almost always lower. The only thing HD beats Lowes on here is quality of lumber. The grade of wood they sell is 2 or 3 times that of Lowes...and the price isn't that much higher. For anything else, Lowes has my vote.
