Is it just me or has honey gotten really expensive?

I just got back from the grocery store. I just started actually cooking for myself this summer. I was buying stuff to make granola, and when it time to get honey, I actually gasped at the price of it. I can't imagine it being so expensive! I don't remember exactly how much it was- but I think $10 per pound. I ended up buying corn syrup for moderately cheaper. Is honey this expensive everywhere? Has it always been so expensive? I'm in central NY. Does this have something to do with colony collapse disorder?

Depending on the type of honey... and where you get it. If there are local farmers markets in your area, check there first. Usually, you can buy it right from the harvester.

There were several brands at the store including 'local' stuff, all around $10/lb. Is this not unusual? I'm flabberghasted that honey costs this much.

I just need(ed) a pint or so to make granola, so I'm good.

Honey bees have been suffering in recent years as well as rising transportation costs have led to honey being more expensive than usual.

The price has been going up for some time. Last last (2007) January when I had a Costco membership I remember the price was ~$6.50 / 5 pounds of honey. Around December it was just under ~$9.00 / 5 pounds. I think it was SueBee honey.

Farmer's Markets FTW. Cheaper and everything was grown/produced locally.

Yeah, the honey bees have been hit with a wide variety of ailments including some that have yet to be explained.

Didn't you hear about the bee plague? Bees have been dying at alarming rates, which is pretty bad news for commercial agriculture because bees are used to pollinate most crops. Honey prices of course will have been affected, too.

I wouldn't know... this guy puts boxes of bees on my parents' land and gives them a couple of crates every year so we haven't bought any for years.

Hm, anyone want some under-the-table honey, only $5 a pound? ;)

ALso, local honey is very good for your immune system when it comes to pollen and allergies.

Am I the only one that finds this post, coming from the Love & Relationships moderator, rather amusing? I agree -- long distance relationships are a pain. ;)

may also have to do with the massive die off of honey bees. which would increase prices dramatically due to short supply.

Is that because it counteracts the localized alergines that affect you. Would this be something like takiny allergy injections?

The massive dieoffs of bee colonies are increasing honey costs as well as colony rental costs to farmers.

I live in western NY and I purchase honey directly from the farmers in the rural areas. Even then it is still pricey.

Honey has gotten expensive, yes.

Actually, almost anything you can find in a grocery store has increased in price dramatically.
I'd like to find a way to blame Dubya, but right now I can only blame him for the oil.

I'd like to find a way to blame Dubya, but right now I can only blame him for the oil.

Which increases the cost of the extensive (petroleum based) fertilizers used in modern agribusiness farming and greatly increases the cost of shipping all that produce to market.

On top of this, the Dub's dumbo gov giveaway of HUGE subsidies (your money!) for corn based ethanol has raised the price of corn through the roof, and, as you no doubt know, high fructose corn syrup is the no.1 or no.2 ingredient in a huge array of processed foods.

last time i bought a large 5lb can of raw honey it was 11bucks. smaller amounts cost more.

if its gone up, its reasonable. and no, u can't blame bush.

last i heard the bees were being ravaged by mites and stuff, so there are troubles with the bees.

yes. You body can adjust to them better that way. It sounds stupid, but it really does work. That is why I have been trying to buy local honey over the last few years. It might be a bit more inconvienent than picking it up at the grocery store, but i would rather support local and have it be benifical to me.
