Less users logged on would be a good indication.

It does seem a lot lower than normal.

Plus the load times are pretty bad at times.

I found that dynamic.anandtech.com was the reason for a lot of slowdowns, sometimes causing pages to timeout. I redirected that address to 127.0.0.1 in my hosts file. Pages load much quicker now.

Other reasons for less traffic: I kept getting the "Oops! Something horrific went wrong again." error message when I tried to post. Apparently everyone got it, as Off Topic saw no new posts from 4:05am - 4:42am, or thereabouts. (Eastern time zone)

And apparently the quotes still don't work properly.

Could be because:

1) The new software 'upgrade' feels like it was written by monkeys mashing feces into a keyboard and saving it
2) Splitting up topics is a stupid idea.. this a tech board not a social networking site. Everything that's 'off topic' of computers should go in the 'off topic' forum.. funny how that works.
3) It's slow as hell

People are getting fed up with the piss poor quality, AT isn't a beta (or dare I say alpha considering the quality) testing lab rat for FuseTalk, I hope they're paying AT a lot of money to essentially get this disaster fixed.

That's my main gripe with the new forums. I liked having camera/photography and car talk in OT because it made for one stop shopping. Now I almost never go into those forums even though I'd likely have something to add or learn something new by reading/posting in them. It was better having them here in OT.

I wouldn't be surprised if AT has lost a few members with the recent changes.

Most likely a combination of many of the things you all listed here. I agree though, it does seem emptier lately.

Wrong. Look at the numbers logged in.

The dynamic server has nothing to do with it. I've had that blocked for two years now. the forums are slow because they are updating the database constantly. It just happened, not it is faster

Yeah, I will say one good thing is that I can post something, or reply to a topic, and not have to dig on page 4 of the OT section to find it 3 minutes later. Some of you guys are used to that speed, so I guess its no big deal. But its hard to keep up with things when you are at work. Sometimes work gets in the way.

You got that error as well? I was kind of surprised to see that, I would have thought this site generated enough revenue to be able to afford the full version of fusetalk. What are we talking about, maybe $20?

I just found my way back. Thought the forums were down for a week. Decided to fire up IE and give it a shot. Cleared my cookies and it works for both browsers.

Agree with mushing all offtopic stuff back into a single forum. Lot of people just aren't going into the specialized areas. I can't even begin to count how many topics use to be posted in General Hardware when they belonged in sub-forums, but those ones got read/replied to the most. The sub-forums didn't really work all that well back then anyways; remember 'Peripherals' and the one reply a week topics... Oh, and by splitting up YAGT, those topics are getting way too 'specific' and rated.......AO.

you should be clicking "my forums" to find threads you posted in rather than sifting through threads manually

It certainly had something to do with it here. The status bar said "Waiting for dynamic.anandtech.com..." and after a minute or so, the page would time out. After the hosts file update, there hasn't been a problem.
It's not the first time this has happened. In months past, dynamic.anandtech.com has caused page timeouts.

Another issue I encounter: pages don't load all the way. I'll be scrolling down, and then it just cuts to gray, in some cases right in the middle of a line of text.

I too get the Fusetalk Expired error from time to time.

I visit less because sometimes I get errors. Other times timeouts, and it is so slow.

When I need a five minute break from work, I don't need to sit waiting for a page to load.

Quotes aren't that bad if you either: a) remove nested quotes b) fix the stupid quotes yourself, you lazy bum. Sure, it's a hassle, but if there's a valid work-around, do it.

Also, maybe the typical patrons of ATOT simply need to diversify and visit other sub-forums on here rather than sit there constantly refresh off-topic.
